Rivetz Giant Hornet Extreme Card Sculpture kit review

Creepy-crawlies don't usually appeal to the Madhouse Mini-testers - in fact, Sophie has a bit of a phobia of bees, wasps and hornets after getting stung twice by one a couple of summers ago - but that didn't stop her getting all enthusiastic about todays #12days item : a Rivetz Giant Hornet Extreme Card Sculpture kit.

In the box, you get a selection of glossy cardboard sheets with pre-cut shapes ready to press out. The designs are quite realistic - look at the head on the left, it's a bit creepy really ! The sheets are double-sided with the underside being grey so it's easy to see which side is which.

You also get some wings made of quite sturdy, transparent plastic.

This is presumably the part that gives the kit the name of "extreme card sculpture" - a rivet gun and a whole load of rivets to hold the card in place once it's been folded into shape. This reminds me a bit of the fasteners used in the Make-Do junk modelling kits - you may remember the rather fab London Underground we made out of a cardboard box a while ago!

The instruction booklet gives you step-by-step instructions with pictures to show it taking shape but it still looks quite complicated so the 8+ age range sounds about right. It would appeal to teens and I can see 11-year-old Sophie making a good go of it (with some help from an adult) but for 7-year-old Juliette, it's far too ambitious.

I have to admit, I still find the finished item quite creepy, maybe because it's so life-like and detailed ! I am impressed with the kits though so I'm pleased to see you can also buy a racer or a rather fabulous dragon.

I think they'd make the perfect gift for those hard-to-buy-for teenage boys in the family, especially having seen how cheap they are on amazon !

star rating : 4.5/5
