Book review : Always On My Mind - Colette Caddle

The strapline on the front cover immediately sets the tone : "If you like Marian Keyes, you'll love Colette Caddle". There can be no doubt about it, you're in for a dose of classic chick lit.

The main character, Molly Jackson, is just weeks away from her wedding with her husband-to-be Declan, when he drops a bombshell. Having been successful in his latest job application, he has to head off to Japan for a ten-week induction course in Japan so the wedding will have to be postponed. Possibly as a knee-jerk reaction to the emotional upheaval, possibly to get back at Declan for hurting her or probably because of a mixture of both, Molly sets off on a crazy mission to track down her "one that got away" ex boyfriend who she had just happened to spot across a crowded airport when dropping off Declan.

While it would be easy to condemn Molly for going behind Declan's back, he also has a black mark against his name for failing to tell his new bosses about his imminent wedding, so instead of trying to apportion blame, we can just sit back and enjoy watching Molly's feverish gallivanting around Ireland trying to track down her former love Luke. As her heart wavers, and we discovered the painful emotional baggage that she shares with Luke, we start warming to the lovers that destiny pulled apart. Then Declan comes back and Molly, as well as the readers, have to decide who would offer the happiest ending.

I love the supporting cast of slightly madcap, eccentric characters that Molly's family offers as a backdrop. The poignant stories of her sister's floundering marriage, her niece and nephew's teenage woes and her own tale of horror add a note of seriousness and emotional weight to the central story of Molly's quest for happiness. Does she get a happy ending ? Of course she does, but you'll have to read the book to find out who can offer that to her !
