Tails Mai Tai Cocktails review

A few weeks ago, I received two little bottles of Mai Tai from Tails who make ready-to-drink cocktails. I'd never had a Mai Tai before (in fact, I'm such a child of the eighties that every time I say or type that, I start singing "Our love is his-tor-y, I'm gonna burn the letters you were sending me" - you'll have to go and google it if you're too young to know what I'm talking about !) so I headed off to investigate.

It is described as "an exotic cocktail of pineapple, almond and lime, made with a blend of light and dark Caribbean Rums". Hmmm this summoned up visions of a fruity, non coconutty version of Malibu and pineapple, sounds good.

I poured it into a glass over ice (having already chilled the bottle in the fridge) and took a sip. It's not as sweet as I was expecting because the sharpness of the lime juice counterbalances the sweetness of the pineapple. It actually reminded me very much of a Ti Punch which is a very popular drink in France - that's a mixture of sugar cane syrup, white rum and lime juice.

It slipped down very nicely and I was surprised to see, it actually had quite a hit to it ! I drank this before lunch on an empty stomach and could feel it go straight to my head ! Looking on the bottle, one glass (I was drinking a 150ml Mini but you can also buy bigger 500ml bottles) contains 2.25 units of alcohol (if my slightly squiffy memory serves me well !) and is 15% ABV. I would have liked to have seen some information regarding the number of calories on the bottle too.

The mini bottles just need to be poured over ice but the bigger bottles are designed to be used as shakers, adding ice to the bottle and shaking before serving. If you want to add a bit of the fun of cocktail making without all the hassle of buying and measuring out different spirits, it's a great compromise.

As well as the Mai Tai that I tried, Tails also make Cosmopolitans, Espresso Martinis and Elderflower Collins.

Kids' DVD review : Everything's Rosie - Bubble Trouble

Just in time for the Easter holidays, we received a review copy of the new Everything's Rosie DVD that was released earlier this month. The DVD, called Bubble Trouble & Other Stories, features thirteen episodes from Series 2 of the show.

If you're unfamiliar with the series, it centres on Rosie, a little girl with a taste for adventure, and a cast of equally lovable characters such as Will, Holly, Big Bear, Oakley the ancient oak tree and Raggles the rabbit. Rosie and her friends are positive, bright and inspiring role models, offering fun, laughter, discovery and timeless life lessons to pre-schoolers.

The episodes on the new DVD are : How to Give Away your Toys and Keep Them, Never Play Tennis With An Egg, Let's All Go to the Fluffy Bug Ball, Big Bear's Little Café, Bubble Trouble, Holly to the Rescue, Follow that Cloud, The Flying Featherettes, Big Bear in a Spin, The Time Travelling Tree, Raggles' Stupendous Breakfast Treat, The Art of Rubbish and Pirate Treasure.

I always love the happy vibe and gentle life-lessons provided by the show. It's quite calming so is perfect for a "TV sleep" (which is what the Madhouse Mini-testers move on to when they've outgrown naptime but still need some quiet time in the afternoon because they're tired !). The kids love the bright colours and the fun characters. The chirpy theme tune always has us singing along too !

I did a double-take when I saw the run-time - it lasts for a whopping 2 hours 24 minutes ! - which makes it great value, especially as it retails for just £6.99, which is much cheaper than many kids' DVDs.

If you have a little Everything's Rosie fan in your midst, make sure you enter my giveaway which I will be posting in just a moment to give you the chance to win your very own copy of the new DVD.

Fruit & veg box 31/3

Lots of interesting looking green things in this week's veg box that I have no idea what to do with so I'll be googling or asking for your ideas ! I have some more Tree Fu Tom Trees (that's broccoli to anyone other than Pierre !), some green beans (that make me want to make a Salade Niçoise like the one we made here), a cucumber, some cherry tomatoes. So far so good, nothing complicated. Then I have fresh spinach - I usually use frozen which goes mushy so I mix it up with cream and parmesan, but I'll have to find something extra special to do with the fresh leaves. Then I have some beans that you've probably never seen before because they're from Brittany - they're called "coco de Paimpol" in France, though I'm not sure what they're translated as. I'm thinking of using them in the slow cooker but I'm not sure really.

Nothing unusual in the fruit side - just some oranges, apples, pears, a punnet of strawberries and a red onion, which should be in the vegetable photo !

I also have some round courgettes that Madhouse Daddy Mike picked up at the supermarket - looks like they've become a regular feature alongside the carrots, onions and potatoes that he usually buys !

What's Cooking at the Madhouse next week? Menu Plan 29/3

Sunday Weigh-in : It's Easter, aaaggghhh !

I knew this week wouldn't be ideal on the food front as I was working late most nights due to after school meetings and, on getting home at 8pm, I am in no mood for starting to cook from scratch. I was hoping for a no change this week and, having just jumped on the scales, I've lost 400g - woohoo ! That's better than expected !

Positives of the week

- I keep going to the fridge, reaching for a bottle of diet coke then hesitating and going for water instead. I even popped out to the supermarket near our school for a bottle of drink before one of my meetings, grabbed a can of diet coke, then, on my way to the till, swapped it for a bottle of mineral water, leaving the can of coke on the shelf in the water aisle. (Naughty !) I've been reading on the Thinking Slimmer website about diet drinks often being a less diet-friendly option than we think, so that's got to be a good move. It's the SlimPod magic doing its work again as it's certainly not a conscious move on my part !

- I have some new jeans, thanks to a recent review on Jeanography. They're a size 14 ! (Well, actually, they're a size 10 but that's their sizing that corresponds to a size 14. Still a great ego boost though !) Now admittedly, the write-up says that you should go a size lower than your normal jeans size but I started my weight loss journey off as a size 20/22 so that still seems amazing to me. They fit nicely but create a tummy bulge so that's my next target - be able to wear them to work without a bulge ! When I looked at them on the bed, I thought they'd never fit, so being able to do them up easily made me feel very good !

- I've discovered that you can still eat healthily when you have no time or energy for cooking. This week's late night options were soup in a carton, a ham/salad sandwich and a veggie-packed beef stew made the day before in the slow cooker. Usually I'd reach for a frozen ready meal (or wait for Madhouse Daddy Mike to throw a frozen pizza in the oven !).

- I've been eating loads of treats this week too. We had a big Peppa Pig cake for the twitter party, and yesterday I made some Philly Cheesecake Brownies and Chocolate & Banana Muffins. In fact, I had one of each for an indulgent Sunday breakfast just before my weigh-in, as well as eating one of each last night to try them straight out of the oven, so I really wasn't expecting good news this morning ! My weight loss mantra has always been to eat a small amount of whatever I want straight away, rather than letting the cravings build until I eat more than I would have, and I'm pleased to see it seems to be working for me !

- I've hit 13.5kg of weight loss so my ticker has clicked over to the next kg and now shows 14kg lost - yay! The difference between my weight lost and weight left to lose badges is widening too - 30 down, 27 to go - which all helps with keeping motivated.

This week's target

Last week's target was : do my best, knowing I wouldn't be able to cook from scratch much. I blew it out of the water and managed a loss !

This week's target is :  A small loss would be great. But it's going to be another long week at work and it's also Easter so there will be lots of chocolate lying around. I'm not going to avoid the chocolate altogether, but I hope to eat it in moderation. I'll try to fit in a long walk with the kids on Monday too, if the weather is OK.

Longer-term targets : Wear my new jeans without a tummy bulge.

START WEIGHT : 91.9kg
TARGET WEIGHT : 66kg
WEIGHT LAST WEEK  : 78.8kg
WEIGHT TODAY : 78.4g
WEIGHT LOST SO FAR :  13.5kg
STILL TO GO : 12.4kg
CHANGE THIS WEEK : -400g

Feel free to add your weightloss posts to our weekly linkie - it's great to see how everyone else has been getting on and give each other support and encouragement :)

Belvita Cranberry Breakfast Biscuits review

A few weeks ago, Belvita sent me a lovely package through for Mothers Day. (Well, it actually arrived a little after Mothers Day because they had a problem with their suppliers, but it's the thought that counts !) It had some lovely treats in it to help get my day off to a good start - a Belvita mug, a beautiful flowery travel mug and an Organised Mum menu planner/shopping list pad which is really useful. They also put in two packs of their Cranberry Breakfast biscuits.

Now, I wouldn't dream of sending the kids off to school without making sure they had something in their tummies, but I admit that I do it frequently, partly because I'm not hungry but also through lack of time. My alarm is already set for 6.15am so I don't want to get up even earlier just to find the time to sort out breakfast for me. Since taking part in Breakfast Week and Shaking Up My Wake Up, I have been trying to change my bad ways though, so the Belvita biscuits are ideal. They come in individually sealed packs of 4 biscuits so I can easily pop one in my pocket to eat at the bus stop, along with a little bottle of Actimel and a piece of fruit for a perfectly balanced breakfast.

From reading on the pack, I learned that Belvita Breakfast biscuits are scientifically proven to slowly release carbohydrates over four hours, so they give you energy for the whole morning and keep you going until lunchtime. The new Cranberry biscuits are a tasty combination of wholegrain cereals and cranberry pieces and they contain vitamins E, B1, B3, Iron and Magnesium. They are crunchy, slightly chewy and very tasty. The cranberries give them some sweetness and prevent them from being too dry.

I was impressed to learn that Belvita actually have ten different varieties available - as well as Cranberry, you have the choice between Milk & Cereals, Fruit & Fibre, Honey & Nuts, Crunchy Oats, Forest Fruits, Muesli, Yogurt Crunch, Honey & Live Yogurt Crunch and Strawberry & Live Yogurt Duo Crunch - so you could have a different flavour every day of the week !

A pack of 4 Belvita Cranberry biscuits contains 216 calories, 6g of fat (of which 2g saturated), 3g of fibre and 9g of sugar.

Warm Potato & Smoked Mackerel Salad recipe

I had plans of making a Fish Pie last week but failed to find any fish in the freezer (apart from salmon fillets, which seemed like a waste) so I decided to try serving it with boiled potatoes instead. That evolved into this rather lovely and satisfying salad. Perfect for a light supper or a healthy lunch.

Warm Potato & Smoked Mackerel Salad

per person :

 4 or 5 lettuce leaves
1 tomato
3 baby gherkins
2 boiled potatoes
100g smoked mackerel (we had peppered smoked mackerel which was lovely)
1 tbsp light Salad Cream
a knob of butter (optional)

It's so simple it barely requires instructions ! Peel and boil the potatoes, or reheat them in the microwave if you're using leftovers. While they're cooking, rip the lettuce leaves into smallish pieces and toss in 1 tbsp of Light Salad Cream. Put the salad on a plate, arrange the tomato wedges and sprinkle with chopped baby gherkins. Place the warm potatoes in the middle of the plate, add a knob of butter (or leave it out if you're counting calories) and sprinkle roughly flaked mackerel on top.

Enjoy your meal !

Kellogg's New & Improved Kids' Cereals review

*** Click through to enter my giveaway and win a box of each ! ***

Kellogg's recently sent a selection of their kids' breakfast cereals to The Madhouse for us to try out. We discovered new Coco Pops Croc Prints, Honey Pops and Rice Krispies Multi-Grain Shapes and rediscovered Honey Loops. All four products have been specially formulated to provide the perfect compromise between taste and nutrition.

Kellogg's explain : "We know it can be hard to find the right balance of what your little ones need, and the taste they love, so we are adding four new lower sugar products to our range which will offer mums greater choice at breakfast time. Coco Pops Croc Prints, Rice Krispies Multigrain Strawberry, Honey Loops and Honey Pops are familiar brands but have healthier recipes- so you can still feel good about giving them to your kids. Fact: They are lower in sugar, lower in salt, made with wholegrain, high in fibre and a source of Vitamin D (25 per cent Recommended Daily Amount). They’ll start to appear in store from this month. This quartet of new cereals are also healthy enough that they meet the strict criteria to be advertised to children and are part of our on-going strategy to launch new products which offer parents a greater choice of breakfast cereals when they do their food shop. We think we have listened to what mums have been saying about wanting lower sugar cereals which offer good nutrition, that kids will actually eat, so we are really proud of what we have achieved."

Sounds great on paper, so it was time to grab some bowls, spoons and milk and see what the kids thought !

The first box that caught their eye was the Coco Pops Croc Prints. As the name suggests, you get cute footprint shaped chocolatey cereal in your bowl. I always think the cocoa flavour of regular Coco Pops is too strong so I was pleasantly surprised to see that these have a slightly subtler flavour. The kids thought they were lovely and chocolatey though and are happy to have a handful straight out of the box instead of a biscuit or sweets, which sounds like a good swap to me. They're also lovely with milk.

Now, I was convinced Honey Pops were old news so I was confused to see these labelled as a new product. A quick bit of research revealed that, while these have been around on the continent for donkeys' years (we've eaten them in France many times as Miel Pops), they have only just been launched on the UK market. They look like small cheese footballs and have a nice mild flavour - they're not overly sweet and the honey flavour isn't too strong. These are another good snack substitute straight from the box, as well as being great with milk.

The Rice Krispies Multigrain Shapes got rave reviews from the Madhouse Mini-testers. This is the first strawberry-flavoured breakfast cereal that we have ever come across and it's delicious. The shapes and colours make it appealing to kids - I can see mainly stars and little men, not sure what the other shapes are supposed to be - and the taste is really nice. A definite hit and one that we'll undoubtedly be buying again.

And finally, the new healthier Honey Loops. Well, it's been a while since we ate these so I couldn't actually remember what the old ones tasted like. Suffice to say, if you hadn't told me they'd reduced the sugar and made them healthier, I'd never have realised. They're sweet enough without being overly syrupy sweet and they're also less sticky, if you plan on eating them straight out of the box !

The kids ultimate breakfast of choice at the moment is a bowl with a handful of each of the four cereals, all mixed up ! Now you know why I call it The Madhouse !

If you fancy giving Kellogg's new lower sugar, higher fibre, wholegrain kids' cereals a go, don't move - I have a giveaway coming right up where you can win a box of each !

star rating : 5/5

RRP : Rice Krispies Multi-Grain Strawberry 325g RRP £2.69, Coco Pops Croc Prints 350g RRP £2.39, Honey Loops and Pops 335g RRP £2.69

Free Easter printables to keep the kids entertained

Spring may have sprung but it's nowhere near warm enough for playing outside for hours on end - we managed half an hour at the park wrapped up in coats and scarves before wimping out and heading home ! - so if you're looking for ways of keeping the kids busy during the Easter holidays, Tinyme may have just the thing.

They have assorted gift tags, bag labels, egg rings and greetings cards for you to download and print out. They even have three different designs to suit your mood : Woodland Easter Printables, Very Vibrant Easter Printables and (my favourite) Loopy Easter Printables.

What's Cooking at the Madhouse next week? Menu Plan 29/3

Well, we survived this week of endless after-school meetings without relying too heavily on the ready meals so I'm hoping we can do the same again next week. I only have late finishes on Tuesday and Friday so it's not quite as bad, especially if I manage to plan in advance. I will be relying on a few jars of cooking sauces as short cuts though.

Saturday :

lunch - We've got an Easter egg hunt at the local park in the morning so I'm guessing a trip to McDonald's, as it's quick and easy.

dinner - homemade soup - Madhouse Daddy Mike's special ! He usually does vegetable, but I might try to convince him to branch out and try French Onion Soup for a change. Last time he did it, he made little pieces of cheese on toast to float on top - yum !

Sunday :

lunch -  roast dinner - possibly the beef that is in the freezer, or something that Madhouse Daddy Mike picks up when he does the weekly shop (not lamb, even if it's traditional for Easter, because we had that last week), with vegetables and roast potatoes. I might do some stuffing balls, to make it a bit different. (I still have some fruity Steenbergs stufing mixes to use.)

dinner - porridge, cereal or a sandwich, if anyone is hungry

Monday :

lunch - I've promised to make one of the kids' favourites - Fajitas with chicken, red & green peppers, onions, mushrooms - toppings : cheese, guacamole, cream, tomato salsa, salad

dinner - Salmon, probably topped with lemon juice and garlic salt then grilled, served with vegetables and maybe rice

Tuesday :

dinner - Madhouse Daddy Mike is in charge as I'll be home late - I'm thinking a carton of Baked Potato Soup

Wednesday :

lunch - it's a quick Madhouse Daddy Mike special : beefburgers and rice or couscous probably

dinner -  Spaghetti Bolognese (with loads of added veg)

Thursday :

dinner - Cantonese Chicken (I have a jar of Uncle Ben's sauce) with pineapple, red/green peppers, onions - served with rice or noodles

Friday :

dinner - probably Baked Potato Soup again - it's another late night at work and we got several cartons of this to review that will need using up

So what are you eating next week?

Jeanography 'Fit First Time' review ( & enter their giveaway)

Sometimes, an email lands in your inbox with details of a new product or service that makes you go "Yes !!! Finally someone has come up with a solution to a real problem !". I got one just a few weeks ago when Jeanography got in touch looking for bloggers to try out their Fit First Time scheme. It's pure genius. They understand how hard it can be to find the perfect pair of jeans online because different brands have different fits so you can choose three pairs of jeans, try them on in the comfort of your own home then send back the two that you don't want. The returns are free and you don't have to pay anything up front - there really is no catch.

You can either choose three sizes of the same pair or three different models in the same size. You can even choose one pair and let their well-trained stylist recommend two other pairs to try in a size and style that correspond to your profile. Having seen several pairs that caught my eye, I decided to order three specific pairs - the Hudson Gia Mid Rise Skinny in Saville (£195), James Jeans Twiggy Mid Rise Legging in Blue Black (£140) and  the NYDJ Jade Legging Mid Rise Stretch Cotton Jegging in Cobalt (£139.95). Nevertheless, the lovely stylist got in touch (by email and phone) to ask if I wanted to change the size I'd ordered because a couple of the brands that I'd chosen have a generous cut - it's like having your very own personal shopper at your disposal !

Your selected jeans arrive by next day delivery in a resealable cardboard box (to make the returns easy). Inside the box is a drawstring bag containing the three pairs of jeans. If you're a mum of young kids, you will totally appreciate how lovely it is to be able to try on the jeans and take your time looking at yourself in the mirror from all angles without having to worry about kid number 1 complaining she's bored/hungry/wants to go home, kid number 2 pulling open the changing room curtain as you're standing in your undies and kid number 3 having great fun trying all the DD-sized bras on his head as a hat !

They were all very nice jeans but the ones that really leapt out at me were the NYDJ ones, partly because the bright blue colour is totally different to the jeans I already own, but mainly because they are such a lovely fit. They're snug but not tight, hugging you in all the right places and feeling like they've been custom made. NYDJ also have very sneaky Lift Tuck Technology® that allows you to look and feel one size smaller. Maybe that explains why I thought they looked so good !

You may have done a double take at the price - I must admit, I don't usually spend this much on a pair of jeans - but these are high-quality, premium denim labels. I actually could tell the difference, in terms of cut and comfort, compared to my usual high street jeans.

When it was time to send back the two pairs that I didn't want, it was dead easy. I just had to phone TNT on the Freephone number and arrange for them to come and pick up the resealed box and bring the returns label. Having phoned at about 1pm, the man on the other end took down all my details and said someone would call before 6pm. Twenty minutes later, he was there ! The Jeanography stylist had also phoned again to see how I was getting on and whether I was happy with my choices. It really is totally hassle-free and everything is done to make the experience enjoyable and successful.

I know that the price range is probably out of reach for a lot of mums working to a tight budget, so I would love to see Jeanography - and all other online clothing retailers - offer this service for lower priced clothing too. It's a fabulous idea and one that is ideal for people who hate trying on clothes instore, with or without kids in tow !

Well done Jeanography - it's definitely a jean-ius idea !

Make sure you try your luck in their giveaway - good luck !   Rafflecopter giveaway
