Steenbergs Organic Stuffing Mix review

Just in time for Christmas, Steenbergs emailed me about their range of organic stuffing mixes and they kindly sent me over some pouches to try out. My first impression was that they look very elegant in the food cupboard. The flavours sound lovely too - as well as the classic Sage & Onion, they sent us Apple & Onion and Cranberry & Apple. There are also Herby Lemon and Sultana & Onion varieties available and a fiery Chilli Stuffing mix will be added to the range this month.

Today, I decided to try out the Apple & Onion Stuffing to accompany some pork chops for lunch. (I'll share the recipe for that later - think cider, onion and mushroom gravy -yum !) As soon as I tipped the contents into a bowl, I could see the tiny pieces of dehydrated apple and it already smelt nice. You need to add 260ml of boiling water, stir it and leave it to stand, as you would with normal packet stuffing mix.

From there, you can either cook it in the microwave for 2 minutes or bake it in the oven for 25-30 minutes. Or you could do as I did and use a combination of both - 2 minutes in the microwave then 10 minutes in the oven under the grill to crisp it up a bit.

I found it had a much more refined taste compared to normal packet stuffing mixes. The apple and cranberries gives it some lovely natural sweetness that went perfectly with the pork. The ingredients list is totally free from artificial additives - breadcrumbs, apple pieces (15%), onion (7%), lemon peel, black pepper, thyme, sage, oregano, marjoram, spearmint, parsley. Every single ingredient except the yeast in the breadcrumbs is totally organic.

The entire contents of the 150g packet contains 549 calories and 13.4g of protein, 123.4g of carbs (including 28.1g of sugar, but that's all natural sugar from the fruit), 0.2g of fat (of which 0g saturated), 8.6g of fibre and 0.3g of sodium. They say on the packet that one 50ml serving contains 284 calories but that sounds a lot to me, as I split ours five ways and we all had a generous serving each.

If you want a more refined stuffing mix for a special meal or just want something a bit different to the usual flavour combinations on offer, this is perfect.
