Happy World Calligraphy Day ! #WorldCalligraphyDay #SaySomethingSpecial

Today is a very special day - it's my eldest daughter Sophie's 18th birthday ! Where on earth does the time go ?! Wishing you a very happy birthday Sophie ! But that is not all - today is also the third World Calligraphy Day.

Celebrations are happening worldwide and calligraphers are getting their pens at the ready, to show some love for the event. Manuscript Pen Company sent us some lovely goodies so that we could join in and #SaySomethingSpecial.

Like last year, Manuscript have partnered with Birmingham Children's Hospital to help #SaySomethingSpecial to children in the hospital's care. You could join in and even get your family involved - it's great to see different age groups saying something special. You can send your letters, drawings, illustrations or written notes to Say Something Special c/o Small Man Media, 2nd Floor, 6 Waterloo Road, Wolverhampton, WV1 4BL, where they will be distributed amongst patients, along with a selection of products from Manuscript’s new Lionheart range for the hospital to use for their art classes and play sessions. It's a lovely way to put a smile on someone's face when they're having a bad time in hospital.

There are other ways to get involved too. If you're a social media fan, why not create a piece of unique artwork and share it with @manuscriptpenco using the hashtags #WorldCalligraphyDay and #SaySomethingSpecial ? They can share it with calligraphy fans worldwide. You can also get involved by writing down your favourite word and sharing it with the hashtag #MyFavouriteWord. I'm sure there will be some strange ones in there !

Manuscript will also be running a selection of competitions for you to win some fantastic calligraphy bundles. Check out @manuscriptpenco on social media. They also have a selection of exclusive World Calligraphy Day craft projects that writers of all ages can get involved in. They can be downloaded from calligraphy.co.uk

Time to get writing !

Disclosure : I received some stationery in honour of World Calligraphy Day.

Celebrating National Stationery Week with Stabilo

Did you know that last week (29th April - 5th May) was National Stationery Week? Whether in my role as a teacher or a mum, I am always splashing out on new pens and pencils to keep our pencil cases overflowing with new goodies. At work, I need an endless supply of red pens for all my marking, but we also have a class that is marked on skills rather than with grades. Instead of totalling up a mark at the end of each test, we set targets then give them a colour from red (not attained), yellow (insufficient), green (attained) to dark green (surpassed). It's actually quite simple, but trying to find a decent yellow pen that is easily readable, as well as two different greens that can be easily told apart, is actually quite tricky ! The Madhouse kids are always colouring, writing secret messages and making lists so they get through lots of stationery too. We were therefore over the moon to receive some new pens to try out from Stabilo.

I always associate Stabilo with highlighters. I invariably have a yellow one (and sometimes orange, green or pink too) in my desk drawer at work and they're fabulous for highlighting key words or the important bits in notes from meetings or new pupil lists. I didn't know, however, that they have various different colours available - this mauve one (used to doodle the heart in the top picture) is from the Pastel collection, which includes pale orange, yellow, green, pink and blue too.

For years, I thought that Stabilo only produced highlighters, but at work, I am forever using their Fineliners, which are great for marking. I love the smooth flow of ink and, along with the usual red, green, black and blue options, this pack includes a purple and a pinky-purple pen. They are available in 41 brilliant colours and 6 fluorescent colours in total, according to the back of the pack, so whatever you're working on, you're bound to find colours to suit.

Most correspondance these days is done online or by phone, but there is something extra special about writing with an ink pen. I love to send special handwritten notes and cards to close friends and family members, to show that I'm thinking about them, or leave little notes in the Madhouse kids' school bags for them to find throughout the day. This funky fountain pen is from the beCrazy range. It comes with one ink cartridge already supplied, which is fabulous if you haven't had a chance to pick up a pack of spares, and it is also suitable whether you're left or right-handed.

The Madhouse kids begged to get their sticky little mitts on this pack of 15 fibre-tipped pens (from the top picture), so I relented and passed them over. They have beautiful bright colours (which you can see in the top picture), which have been perfect for colouring, writing messages or completing complicated maps for geography homework ! As a parent, I was also incredibly impressed to see on the pack that the pens will apparently still colour after eight weeks without a cap. That sounds like great news, as we seem to have a pen lid-eating monster hiding somewhere in our house ! But that's not all - more great news for parents is that they are washable and the tips are push-resistant. If I had to come up with a list of our top pen peeves, they have just solved most of them in one fell swoop !

Sadly, our package was delivered to the wrong address and has just been dropped off by a friendly neighbour, so National Stationery Week has now been and gone. As far as I'm concerned, there is no particular time for buying stationery though, as it always comes in handy. It never fails to put a smile on my face whenever I uncap a new pen and turn to the first page in a new notebook or diary. There's something much more satisfying about crossing things off a handwritten to-do list than deleting something quickly typed out online too !

Disclosure : I received some goodies from Stabilo in order to share my honest opinion.

Meet my new control journal (Filofax Notebook review)

I've always been an organised person, at home and at work. I have a work diary, a calendar in the bedroom, a family planner wallchart in the hall, I menu plan and write my shopping list as I go, 99% of our bills are on standing order and I pay those that aren't as soon as they come in, ... However, since Madhouse Daddy died - and in particular since going back to work last week - I feel like my brain has reached its maximum capacity. Part of that is the fact that, seven weeks on, I am still dealing with a mountain of paperwork - a mountain that never gets smaller because as soon as I get close to clearing it, a load more arrives that needs filling in and sending off, accompanied by various photocopies of things that have been filed away for the last couple of decades. Another part is that now, I have to deal with everything and remember everything without a back-up. Madhouse Daddy always did the shopping and, although I gave him a shopping list with everything I needed to get dinner on the table, he was in charge of checking household essentials like toothpaste, toilet roll and dog food. I've forgotten to pick those up on more than one occasion - luckily we have shops very close to the house ! When Filofax got in touch and asked if I'd like to review one of their notebooks, I jumped at the chance.

There's something very cathartic about starting a new notebook and turning to the first blank page. It's like a literal version of turning the page, wiping the slate clean, finding a new beginning. Very apt for the situation we find ourselves in here at The Madhouse.

The hardest thing is deciding what to write where - there's nothing worse than filling up page 1 then suddenly thinking oh, I wish I'd left a blank page at the start to put that instead. Filofax makes things easier because both the pages and the inserts can be removed and reinserted wherever you want. I keep switching mine around so it's great if you're indecisive or a bit of a perfectionist and want to start certain parts again.

I've decided to make mine into a control journal and it's ideal. As well as having lots of pages to fill, there is a useful pocket that can be used for storing bills to be paid, important notes from school, party invitations or flyers about events you want to visit, all in one place so you know where they are. I also love the ruler that can be pulled off then reattached whenever you need to underline things or make tables to be filled in.

So where to begin? Well, for me, it was time to empty my brain of all the things I need to do, from big stuff like arranging for the headstone and chasing up the remaining paperwork to small, inconsequential things (that are always the ones that risk being forgotten) such as buying a book for Sophie for school or dropping off a cheque at the bank.

Next, a basic shopping list of all the things that are likely to run out regularly - store cupboard basics, cleaning supplies, the aforementioned dog food and toilet roll ! This is my master list, to scan through after menu planning to complete my weekly shopping list and minimise the number of emergency trips to the local shops to pick up what was forgotten.

I'm not someone who stresses over things but I was starting to feel strangely serene and totally in control as I was writing everything down, so I decided to continue "emptying my brain". (I feel like a computer doing a clean up, emptying the recycling bin and deleting old files that aren't needed any more !) Even if they're already jotted down in various places, I made a page of all the upcoming events for me and the kids - meetings, sleepovers, dental appointments, ... The kids invariably tell me about upcoming school events or things they've arranged with their friends while I'm busy cooking dinner or washing up, so this can be the place to jot down anything they don't want me to forget.

It's not allabout serious planning and the boring day-to-day obligations though. I've also started a section that I've called our Fun Times Bucket List - both Big Plans and Small Stuff. Big Plans are mainly days out that will take some organising, like trips to theme parks or towns that are a train ride away, but also include the kids' bucket list of travel destinations. Juliette wants to go to NYC and Canada (sounds good to me !), Sophie wants to discover Antarctica (might be more complicated !) and Pierre wants to visit Paris - well, that one is easy enough ! My work colleagues made a collection after Madhouse Daddy died and gave us a card with a cheque in it, "for us to do something nice as a family when we feel up to it". I promised the kids that we'll go for a day or maybe even a weekend at EuroDisney, maybe for Halloween or Christmas, which they're excited about - I just need to plan it now ! I've also started jotting down things that the kids have asked to do at random moments, so that I can remember during the holidays or weekends. Top of the list was making edible slime - I can tick that one off already ! (Click through if you want to see how we got on.)

It's a well thought-out notebook, with all sorts of different types of pages that you can buy as refills (blank, lined, squared, ...) and it's already become an integral part of my day-to-day organisation, whether looking for a form that needs to be filled in in the front pocket or checking what I need to buy when I pop to the supermarket.

Filofax Notebook Classics are available in a variety of colours and designs and cost £12.99 each. If you need a reason to treat yourself to a new notebook, did you know it's National Stationery Week this week (23rd–29th April)?

Get ready for National Stationery Week #WritingMatters

Next week is National Stationery Week - seven whole days to celebrate the best things in your pencil case and on your notepad, as well as championing the fact that handwriting is vitally important throughout the world with the campaign theme 'Writing matters.'

As a teacher, I definitely agree with that sentiment and unfortunately, it seems that writing matters less and less in the modern world. Some of the 11-15 year old pupils I teach have such atrocious handwriting that it takes me ages to try to decipher their work and, in the end, if I really can't manage, I have to mark it wrong, meaning that they lose points when they possibly had the right answer. On a recent work trip to Norway, we visited several primary schools (their school system is a bit different and they stay in the same school from age 6-12) and they are having a big push on equipping all the kids in a class with an ipad or chrome book. They use it throughout their entire school life and at the end, it's theirs to keep. We saw them creating some great graphic content, watching educational videos and taking part in group quizzes, which was all really motivating, but the teachers mentioned that the downside is that they have great problems writing neatly and getting hands on with things like scissors, compasses and rulers. While technology is undoubtedly a great tool for teachers, the powers that be have to understand that being able to write properly still has to take top priority !

If you want to encourage your children - or yourselves ! - to take part in National Stationery Week, the Seven Days of Stationery is a great place to start. These daily themes form the spine of National Stationery Week and are designed to give people something to celebrate and support each day.

Monday is Pen and Pencil Day

Go through your pencil case and pen pot and throw away all those half chewed pencils and leaky pens and treat yourself to some brand new ones. Go for glittery and fluffy or sleek and minimalist - whatever you fancy. When we came back from Norway, we brought back a pen for the school secretary with a boxing reindeer on the top that flashes every time you write - we didn't think she'd really use it but she loves it ! Make sure you get one that you feel comfortable using too - there are even pens specifically designed for left-handed people these days and Write Size pencils that come in various sizes so that they are adapted to your child's hand, whatever their age. For once, size does matter !

Tuesday is Get Crafty

Once of my favourite activities when I was a child was collecting up souvenirs - birthday cards, ticket stubs, pressed flowers, sweet wrappers from foreign holidays, ... and sticking them all in a scrapbook, along with little texts to remind me of what was so special about them. When the Madhouse kids were babies, I got into the modern version of scrapbooking, decorating photo albums with ribbons, stickers, shaped hole punchers and embossers, metallic pens, ...I still have a whole box of pretty papers, pens and embellishments that I'm sure the kids would love to help me use in various little projects, from making bookmarks and picture frames to greetings cards and secret journals. Maybe stressbusting colouring is your thing, in which case you could treat yourself to some posh new pencils and a new colouring book.

Wednesday is World Stationery Day

You can interpret this in many ways - you could buy some new supplies that evoke a foreign country, such as these cactus-themed page markers or a new pen featuring the Eiffel Tower. You could raid the stationery cupboard at work and try to recreate an iconic landmark like the Chrysler Building or the London Eye out of paperclips and rubber bands ! With a little help from an online translator, you could use your funkiest coloured pens and your best handwriting to create cute messages on Post It notes in different languages and place them around the office and your house.

Thursday is Thank You Thursday

Do you remember sitting down after Christmas and writing thank you notes to all your relatives for the gifts they sent you when you were a child ? Do you make your kids do it these days or do they just make vaguely appreciative noises on the phone? Writing thank you notes has become pretty much a lost art and it's a real shame, especially as it creates lasting reminders that relatives can look back on. Receiving gifts isn't the only thing to be grateful for though - if you buy some pretty little credit-card sized note pads or post-its, you can get creative with sparkly pens and stickers and create some little messages for your kids and spouse, telling them all the things you appreciate about them, to slip in their lunchbox or under their pillow at unexpected moments.

Friday is Fountain Pen Friday

I distinctly remember my last year of primary school, when those who had successfully mastered writing neatly with a pencil were allowed to progress on to an italic fountain pen. We were allowed to go along to the secretary's office proudly gripping our pennies (I think it was only about 5p !) to buy replacement cartridges, and the whole process of writing, blotting with a piece of pink blotting paper, holding the nib at the correct 45° angle to get the thick and thin lines, using a corrector pen to make ink splashes and mistakes disappear like invisible ink, made us all feel special and grown up. Writing with a fountain pen totally changes your writing, as you have to slow down and concentrate on forming each letter and waiting for the ink to dry before you turn the page.

Saturday is Signature Saturday

I remember when I was tween and a teen, hanging out with my best mate in our bedrooms, we'd spend ages practising our signatures for when we were married, to the school heart throbs or the popstars and actors that we were in love with at the time. I seem to remember that I was practising being Mrs Kershaw (wife of Nik), Mrs Johnson (wife of Don, because I loved Miami Vice) and Mrs Willis (wife of Bruce, with hair, circa Moonlighting !). This is a great activity to get your kids involved in, because they'll be having so much fun, they won't even realise they're practising their writing skills !

Sunday is Write A Letter Day

When I launched a penpals project a few years ago, I asked if the pupils in my classes had a penpal in a foreign country. Many of them put up their hands and said that they spoke with people on Facebook or in video games who lived abroad, but none of them had ever put pen to paper. Once I'd actually managed to convince them that three lines might be OK for an email but not a letter and got some decently sized letters to send off, they were really enthusiastic, especially when they started receiving things - letters but also little gifts like sweets, postcards and stickers - through the post. Maybe you live far from your family and keep in touch by email and phone - put in a bit of extra effort and write a letter instead. I always find that I go into much greater detail about how I am feeling, rather than just what we have done, in a letter, and I always hang up the phone or hit "send" and think, oh, I know what I forgot to tell them ... if you're writing a letter, you can just add a PS ! How about getting the kids to write a fan letter to their favourite celeb ? - who knows? They might even be lucky enough to get a reply !

If you're looking for more ideas of ways to get the kids involved, head over to the Parents' section of the National Stationery Week website. Keep an eye open on twitter and facebook throughout the week too, as there will be lots of promotions and giveaways from all the brands sponsoring the event.

Disclosure : We received a lovely selection of stationery to help celebrate during the week.

Mum's Notes - a splash of luxury for mother's day (review)

What do you do when your child says something heart-meltingly cute, you come up with the perfect recipe or you want to meal plan or organise a big party? These days, most people reach for their blog and social media channels, but you still can't beat putting pen to paper and keeping a hard copy for posterity. I still have a paper calendar, family organiser and address book and I love snipping recipes out of magazines to stick in a book of recipes to try at a later date, so I was over the moon to receive a Mum's Notes notebook to review from Mum's Office.

It has a beautiful raspberry-coloured cover with a funky snakeskin effect that I absent-mindedly find myself stroking at idle moments in school meetings ! It offers a real sense of luxury with thick, high quality paper and gilted edges. I also love the fact that it has rounded corners so that it doesn't jab me in the leg when I sling my school bag over my shoulder and walk to the bus stop.

Each double page has one side lined and one side blank which is perfect for doodles, visual plans or sticking in keepsakes or snipped out recipes. It also has some pretty ribbons which are great for marking your page.

There are some other equally funky colours available - peppermint, blackberry or silver. The portrait style 15 x 20cm format is the perfect size - small enough to fit in your handbag but big enough to have plenty of creative space.

If you want to splash out on a little taste of luxury for yourself or buy something that's both funky and functional for your own mum for Mother's Day, it's a great gift idea. If you want another fab idea, check out my review of the ultra-convenient menu planner/shopping list, also from Mm's Office.

star rating : 5/5

RRP : £12.95

Tiny Me Personalised Products review

You may remember me mentioning Tiny Me in the past - they often have free themed downloadable printables and I shared the ones they did for Easter, the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics with you. That's not the only thing they create though - they focus on providing a range of fun personalised gifts and stickers, including bags and pencil cases, address books and journals, wall stickers and name labels. Back before Christmas, they sent me through a sample pack of their stickers - I love the ones for the kitchen which make it particularly easy to recycle glass jars as food containers - along with a voucher to choose some products to review on their website.

This is the first thing that I picked - how cute is this? There are a huge range of colours and designs available and, of course, you put whatever text you want. This is the Birdies & Flowers design in Plum colour and it will be my new tool for keeping organised and on top of my reviews - which I do already but my current planner is falling apart and only has a few pages left !

I love the layout of the pages, dotted with little bird drawings that tie in with the picture on the front cover. The A5 size is perfect for my needs but there are other sizes available. This retails at £19.99 and is a lovely personalised gift idea.

I also found these Dinner Planners which are ideal for keeping track of what we're eating, alongside my weekly menu plan here on the blog. This means I can see what I need to defrost without going online and also lets the other members of the family see what's on the menu. The pack contains 20 sheets and costs £6.

I thought the delivery charges were quite reasonable. They depend on the value of the order - £1.99 for orders up to £19.99, £3.99 for orders costing £20 - £39.99 and £5.99 for orders over £40.

With Valentine's Day and Mother's Day not too far away, this could be a great place to start looking for gift ideas.

Faber Castell's Playing & Learning range review

Heading back to school is always synonymous with emptying out all the dried up/worn out/chewed contents of the kids' pencil cases and starting all over again. This year, Faber Castell made it all a lot easier by sending through a bundle of their little artists' supplies to kit the Madhouse Mini Testers out with. Pierre absolutely loved the chunky pear-shaped wax crayons which he found really easy to hold.

But the star attraction was this rainbow of felt tip pens. What's so special about a bucket of pens, I hear you ask? Well, this is a special connector bucket, which allows you to join the pens together to make 3D models. How cools is that ?!

Juliette had fun joining them all together into different multicoloured tubes.

But Sophie got more creative, using the extra connectors to make 3d shapes, and had great fun. I did make sure I pointed out that this is an activity to save for home, not one to do in the middle of a maths lesson at school when they get bored though !

We have also discovered the Faber-Castell app called "Creative Kids" which targets children aged 6+. The app aims to stimulate fine motor skills, creativity, and imagination by showing children how to create their own animations and moving images using coloured pencils, paper and an ipad. Using the ipad as a light box so that you can trace pictures on it is a genius idea (although the kids are under very strict instructions to be gentle and not press hard) and being able to bring their pictures to life as wobbly mice, giggly ghosts and creepy crawlies has been a source of much fun and excitement. Even better news, the app is totally free and there aren't even any annoying in-app purchases to worry about. The app can be downloaded from the itunes store, see here for more details. Promoting artistic creativity through the ipad seems to be a key theme this autumn - it was only yesterday that I was reviewing the Mister Maker app too !

RRP : £5.95 for Pear Shaped Easy Grip Crayons, £14.99 for Faber-Castell Connector Bucket, totally free for the app

Paperblanks 18-month Dayplanner review

I did a back to school round-up yesterday, featuring some of the products that we had received to review that I shared with the girls as they got their school bags ready last night. There was one product that was carefully put aside just for me though, because it is far too lovely to be wasted on the Madhouse Mini Testers !

Here it is. A beautiful 18-month diary from Paperblanks. The photo doesn't do it justice though. You don't really get the full effect of the beautiful, shimmery, foil-embossed cover. This is the Flutterbyes design in Maxi size which has an RRP of £16.99, but there are many other styles and formats available.

As a teacher, this is absolutely ideal. Each double page gives you the view of a week, with each day having a vertical column timed from 8am to 8pm. Not that I have any intention to keep working up until 8pm on a regular basis !

It also has a monthly planner.

There's a removable mini address book at the back, meaning that you can transfer it to next year's diary, rather than copying out all the names and addresses again.

It also has loads of useful information such as international holidays in 2014, UK holidays, measurement conversions, world time zones and international dialling codes.

It's a beautiful, high quality diary that might take some of the pain out of noting down my endless meetings and work commitments over the next year and a half !

Getting our school bags ready !

Getting our school bags ready !

Depending on your point of view, you may be feeling very sad or very relieved that it's back to school time. The only problem with being a teacher is that I never get that "phew, time to get some peace and quiet and me-time" feeling because when the kids go back, so do I. I can't complain though - I have just had the whole summer off ! We sat down earlier and got the school bags ready (theirs and mine !). We'd received some lovely school supplies for us to review so we dished them all out between us.

Juliette grabbed the whiteboard marker set - she's always losing her markers and you usually only get one in the pack with the whiteboard so it's great to get eight pens (two of each colour in red, green, blue and black). The large eraser is much more practical than the tiny little erasers on the tops of the pen lids, which is what she usually uses. She also grabbed the bright red pencil case (to keep all her new markers in) and the "magic" Pritt Stick (which goes on blue then turns transparent - very handy if you want to see where you've glued already). (All kindly supplied by ASDA - they currently have a selection of products on 2 for £3, as well as £1 offers on their back to school range. Go to the ASDA School Shop for more info. You may also like to check out our review of the ASDA school uniform range here.)

We also received this selection of beautiful mid-year diaries from Letts. Hitting the perfect balance of funky and functional, they might take some of the pain out of keeping track of all that homework ! The A6 diaries cost £5.99 and the larger A5 ones with a day to a page cost £9.99. They have plenty of room for marking down the all important dates (as in tests and homework deadlines, not secret trysts with the school heart-throb !), although if the girls are anything like me, the first thing they'll be highlighting will be the school holidays ! (For more information, see www.letts.co.uk.)

A really fun and unusual concept next - pencils that you use as normal then, when they get too small, you can plant them and they will magically grow into a plant ! Don't believe me? Find out more at http://www.plantyourpencil.com/ ! I'm hoping this will stop the girls from chewing the ends of their pencils, which is what they normally do ! They'll be able to eat the pencil plants instead though, as they will be basil, coriander, dill, mint, rosemary, sage or thyme. We haven't planted ours yet as they have been carefully tucked away in pencil cases but I'll show you how we get on when we do ! (RRP €3.50 each or 10 for €30)

I already had a bit of a stationery fetish but this little lot took restocking the pencil cases for the new school year to a whole new level !

ASDA School Uniform review

Buying school uniform before the kids go back to school is a necessary evil, so I was really pleased when ASDA asked if we'd like to try out some of their range of Back to School products, including school uniform and stationery. Unfortunately, when I asked the Madhouse Mini-testers if they'd put school uniform on for me to take the photos, they groaned and said they didn't want to think about going back to school yet ! (We had admittedly just got back from a fab fortnight in Morocco and school was the last thing on their minds !)

I'll try to get some photos of the uniform being worn over the weekend to add to the post, but in the meantime, here are the fab bargains that we were sent through. I was amazed to see that they have a range of trousers, skirts and jumpers starting at just £3. (Update - As you can see, I won - I managed to convince them to try them on in the end !)

Black Girls School Senior Stretch Skinny Leg Trousers - £7

Pinafore Dress for Juliette - £6

Some football shorts for Pierre - 2 pack for £6

Black Canvas Trainers (up to a whopping size 9 so great news for Bigfoot Sophie !) - £6
Gorgeous Patent Embossed Star Shoes for Juliette - £11
Boys school trainers - £5

Juliette loves both the dress and the shoes (especially the shoes - shiny and stars, what little girl wouldn't?!)

Pierre loved his shorts and trainers too.

I was very impressed with the quality of the items for such low prices. When you have several school age children to kit out, this is a real bonus and at those prices, you don't have to worry about clothes getting lost or worn out during the year and needing to be replaced.

They also sent through some back to school essentials which you can never have enough of. ASDA currently have a 2 for £3 deal on a range of products, including lunchboxes, felt pens, glue sticks, pencil cases and other stationery. You can see the products in this promotion here.

If you don't fancy traipsing around the shops with a stroppy teen or pre-teen who really doesn't want to waste their last bit of summer holiday looking at school uniform, you can also buy it all online - http://direct.asda.com/george/school-uniform/D10,default,sc.html - there's free delivery when you spend £20 on schoolwear with the code SCHOOL06.
