Dr.PAWPAW Balms review

If you ask my teenaged daughter, she will tell you that Dr.PAWPAW is really cool because loads of celebs and big make-up artists use it. If you ask me, I'll tell you that it's cool because it was created by a couple who needed a multipurpose balm for their daughter who had been diagnosed with eczema. They created a product that could be used on lips, skin and hair and appeal to everyone from babies to grandmas. Two completely different takes on the company, but both fully justified !

Dr.PAWPAW have recently launched 10ml versions of all of their balms, giving you the chance to try out more of the different options available. Each of the pocket-friendly tubes is perfect for keeping in your handbag and prices start at a very reasonable £3.95.

Starting off with the Original Clear Balm (RRP £3.95), the packaging tells you that it can be used to moisturise, nourish and protect very dry lips, cuticles, elbows and cracked heels. That's just the start though ! It can be used on the face as a primer for dry skin, as a hydrating soothing evening mask, to give a dewy finish, separate eyelashes and smooth eyebrows. On the body, it is good for cuticles, dry skin patches, elbows, knees, as a foot treatment or an evening hand treatment. You can use it on your hair to style short hair, seal ends, tame frizz and add texture. Finally, on skin, it protects sensitive skin, soothes sore irritated skin, can relieve eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis, heals burns, insect bites and blemishes, repairs cuts and prevents scarring. The balm contains a trio of plant-based ingredients - Pawpaw fruit for long-lasting nourishment of hair and skin, Aloe Vera to soothe sore, sensitive skin and repair hair, and Olive Oil, to deeply moisturise stubborn dry cracked skin. I love the way it feels, instantly soothing and moisturising skin (I've been using it to sort out my hands, which aren't enjoying the non-stop washing and hand gel that has become a part of normal life during the pandemic) and my daughter loves the taste when she uses it on her lips, saying that it reminds her of peanut butter !

The green tube is the Shea Butter Balm (RRP £4.95). It contains all of the same ingredients and offers all of the same benefits as the yellow tube, with the addition of Shea Butter, which is great for smoothing and softening tough skin. I've been rubbing this into the rough skin on my heels and I have to say, it does seem to be helping.

The Tinted Peach Pink Balm (RRP £3.95) again offers all the same benefits as the original yellow one, but this one can also be used as a lip or cheek tint. I think it's great for protecting dry or chapped lips, but I called on my daughter for testing it out on her cheeks.

She loves the look and feel of it as a blusher. It adds a subtle, natural-looking tint, which can be layered up for a bolder dash of colour. There are other colours available too : Rich Mocha, Outrageous Orange, Hot Pink and Tinted Ultimate Red.

I have to say, we were all really impressed. If there's one thing I love, it's a multi-tasking product and this one deals with whatever the summer can throw at us - sore lips, mosquito bites, cut fingers, rashes, ... As well as the lovely natural ingredients, the products are vegan approved, cruelty free and ethically sourced, use recyclable packaging and are made in the UK. Even bigger bonus points for the company as they have recently donated over 50,000 balms to front line workers.

Snails Kid-friendly Nail Varnish review

When this pretty little bag of girlie goodies arrived at The Madhouse, both 8-year-old Juliette and 11-year-old Sophie squealed with delight ! But I was just as happy as they were because these nail varnishes are from Snails, that's short for Safe Nails.

I must admit I'd never heard of them but I wish I had long ago - they are every mother's (and indeed mother-to-be's) dream because they are not only non-toxic but also water-based and water-removable, designed especially for children and expectant mothers. That means they can be easily washed off from your nails but also, if (or, in my experience, when !) nail varnish ends up getting knocked over on the floor/table cloth/bedding/clothes, it should come out too. I have various pink and purple splodges on Sophie's old Barbie duvet sets that show how hard - in fact I would even go so far as to say impossible - it is to get regular nail varnish out in the wash. I also hate the eye-watering fumes and harshness of nail varnish remover so being able to bypass that is another huge plus point in my eyes.

But I have to admit, as they are water-based, I was expecting the colours to be a bit wishy washy and the varnish itself overly runny. Well, if I hadn't known, I'd never have been able to tell the difference. Here are Sophie's shots for showing off the polishes - ignore the blue bits around the edges and on her big toe - that was from the regular nail varnish that she had on before and hadn't managed to get off completely !

The colours are really pretty and vibrant and the nail varnish gave really good coverage. It doesn't come off if you wash your hands quickly but if you have a bath and let it soak or give it a good rub with soap and water under the tap, it does come off.

I've been happy enough for Sophie to use nail varnish because she's old enough to be able to apply it relatively cleanly now, but I rarely allow Juliette to paint her finger or toe nails because she always manages to make a mess. With these washable products from Snails, I will be much more likely to let her have her girlie fun too though, so she's over the moon. And it's just in time for the summer when she will be able to show off her carefully painted toes in her sandals ... if the sun ever comes out, that is !

To celebrate their first aniversary, Snails are currently offering a special offer on their website - you can get a little bag (as in the top photo) with two random nail varnishes, a buffer and instruction booklet for €7.50. As the regular price per nail varnish is €8, that's a really good deal.

star rating : 5/5

RRP : €8 each (or currently €7.50 for two random nail varnishes)

Giveaway #216 : Win 3 x Eyes Right mascara from Lush - closed - winners @B1312xoxo @chrissy4116 @Madrabbitgirl

Lush have come up with a fabulous new mascara product and I have three of the little beauties to give away to lucky Madhouse Family Reviews readers. Here's the description :

Eyes Right mascara – in Black (£12.00)

A really simple, beautiful and gentle mascara that can be worn by those with even the most sensitive of eyes. With only one preservative in (while most mascara on the market contains between 4-6) it won’t irritate the eyes. Wheatgrass is the key ingredient in Eyes Right, as it’s packed full of vitamins and minerals to really condition and nourish the lashes. Japan and Carnauba wax help it set, so it won’t smudge all over your face if you’re caught in the rain or at the gym. For those with sensitive eyes who are looking for a kind, natural look – although it can be reapplied to give a more dramatic, emphasised effect.

George at Asda's spring/summer nail varnish collection review

How funky are these ?! You may remember a couple of weeks ago, I shared a blogpost with you (here) entitled "Spend v Splurge",  showing you Asda's new spring/summer range of budget-friendly make up and comparing them to the almost identical big brands with the equally big price tags.

When we were offered the chance to review some of the range, we opted for the nail varnishes. I love the way nail varnish can add the finishing touch to a look, make you smile every time you see your fingers and toes and really glam up a new pair of sandals. I also love the way just a few minutes applying varnish can look good for several days or even weeks if you reapply it when necessary.

Juliette wanted to try out the sparkly glitter nail varnishes, choosing to alternate the green and purple colours on her fingers. When I started applying it, the first coat was disappointing as it looks like clear nail varnish with a few bits of glitter sprinkled in. I applied a second coat quite thickly and this sorted it all out though, giving a deeper colour and pretty good coverage. As you can see from the photo above, there are a few white bits - they're not chips, they're places where there is no glitter. These can easily be filled in though and you should remember that this is being modelled by a squirmy seven-year-old, which probably doesn't help. The glitter nail varnishes only cost £2.75 and come in a variety of colours, including Raspberry Ripple and Aquarium that you can see here. At that price, you can even let your daughters have some as a special grown-up treat for the summer holidays.

Sophie opted for George’s Molten Metal Nail Vanish in a colour called Spaceman, which is a cheaper version of the very similar Essie equivalent. This goes on smoothly and just one coat gives great coverage. Tweens and teens will love the glam silver shine but it's equally appealing to grown ups - in fact I've just put some on my toe nails. This will be perfect for getting my tootsies out in my strappy sandals and flip flops if the sunshine continues ! It only costs £2.75 which is amazing value.I'm hoping it will stop Sophie biting her nails too !

We also received a lovely pink varnish in a shade called Singapore Sling. Sophie put this on her toenails and one coat gave great coverage and a lovely deep colour. She also remarked that it dried really quickly which makes sense as I later discovered that this is a special Quick Dry Nail Varnish. I've just checked the price and this costs a whole £1.75 !

At these prices, it's definitely time to give your nail varnish bag an overhaul for the summer season !

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : from £1.75 - £2.75

Add a Touch of Bollywood Bling To Your New Year Party Look

If you're looking for a fab new look for the New Year parties, you might like to try this smouldering Bollywood look. Brit-Bollywood songstress Nindy Kaur offers easy tips on how to get the perfect Bollywood Bling look that will set you apart from the rest of the party goers this season and add a touch more glamour to your Christmas and New Year celebrations.

********************************************************

The first step in creating the Bollywood look is to create a perfect and flawless base. First apply a tinted moisturizer or foundation all over the face and neck. You can check the shade on your jaw line first which will tell you immediately if it blends with your skin. A good base will help to keep the rest of your makeup.

Next you need to create a strong brow, use a lighter foundation or apply highlighter to the skin directly under the brown. Shape your eyebrows using tweezers or threading which is more popular in India, then use a pencil to highlight the brows and create a strong shape. A perfect brow shape will frame the eyes and entire look.

The most important part of the Bollywood look are the eyes which must be the strongest feature of your makeup to achieve the Bollywood look.

Blend several eye shadow shades together to get the desired smokey effect. Start with the lighter colour on the lid and blend in the darker colours into the socket of the eye. Bring the shadow out to the end of the eyebrow to create the feline effect.

Apply liquid eyeliner across the eyelid close to the lash line, and create an elongated tick at the end. A great tip is to create the tick at the corner of the eye first, then sweep your line across the lid. Next, to create the sultry look, use black khol pencil in the inner rims of the eye to perfectly frame them, also use the kohl right into the inner corner of the eye to give the feline effect.

False eyelashes are a must, use mascara on top to create the effect of thick lashes

If you can, wear colored contact lenses, they really add to the look. For example green and turquoise eye shadows look amazing against brown eyes.

Keep the lips natural with a nude coloured gloss that adds shine and volume.

The crowning glory of the Bollywood look, is glossy and healthy hair. Loosely curl and backcomb to finish the entire look.

Myleene Klass Nails review

When I was asked by the lovely Jonathan at JML if I'd like to try out some Myleene Klass Nails, I have to admit I was expecting the same old same old. I've reviewed a few types of glue-on nails from the likes of Nailene and Revlon and thought they would be basically the same. I was therefore surprised when they arrived to see that they're not at all the same - they're totally flat stickers. Looking more closely, that's because these are nail wraps, not stick-on nails.

I wasn't sure how this would work in practise but I have to admit I've been pleasantly surprised. They're much simpler and more convenient to apply than acrylic glue-on nails because you don't have to worry about getting glue everywhere and there's no waiting around for the glue to dry. You literally peel them off, stick them on your nails, fold over the top  and use the enclosed emery board to file off the excess. You also get clear stickers to put on top of the patterned ones to give them extra gloss and protect them.

You get 24 nail wraps in a pack with various sizes, so that you can adapt the size of the wrap to the size of your nails. I actually found that if you have short nails, you can get away with cutting the long strips in half, which makes them great value. They can be used on finger and toe nails.

I admit that, as we got the funky zebra print nail wraps - a look that I couldn't pull off on an average day at work and that I wanted to keep for a special occasion - I've only had a play with a couple of nail wraps, just to see how I got on. I found them absolutely simple to apply but the top edge of the nail wrap was difficult to get totally smooth. I'm sure I'd be able to eliminate the rough edges with a bit of practise though.

The nail wraps look fantastic and give you an immediate touch of elegance to really finish off a special outfit. However, there is no way they'd last through a day of washing up, cleaning floors and the constant handwashing that comes with having a family to look after. I would therefore see these as a one night wonder for a special occasion rather than a more long-lasting nail art look.

The range of designs is fantastic with animal prints, floral patterns, hearts, polka dots and glittery effect nail wraps all available. You can get really funky, eye-catching designs that you would never manage at home while paying a fraction of the price that you would in a nail bar. They would be perfect for glamming up a Christmas or New Year party look and would make fabulous stocking fillers for teens.

Each pack of nail wraps usually retails at £5.99 but you can currently buy a special pack containing 5 different designs (so that's 120 nail wraps in total) with a bonus file and nail prep for £19.99 which would be fabulous for seeing you through the whole festive party season.

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : £5.99 for 1 pack (or £19.99 for 5 packs at JML)

Nailene Ultra Adhesive Tabs review

I've reviewed several Nailene products in the past that have been sent all the way across from America. We tried out their nail art stickers (here) and their funky nails (here). You may have noticed my Official Nailene Tester badge in my side bar. But this time, I was sent a new product that has hit the shops in the UK : Nailene Ultra Adhesive Tabs.

I must admit that one of the things that slightly worried me about using stick-on nails was not being able to get them off at the end without damaging my real nails underneath. I read a few horror stories online about people totally ripping off their real nails after having their nails done at nail bars (not when using Nailene nails, I hasten to add). But the Nailene nails come off with no problem at all, just by soaking them in acetone polish remover. You must make sure your nail varnish remover isn't acetone free (our usual one is) or it won't work ! This is a bit time consuming but you should never break or peel off the false nails because this could cause damage underneath. But there's a new product that makes it all a whole lot easier.

The clever new Ultra Adhesive Tabs make putting on and, above all, taking off the nails a total breeze. Nailene explain : “Hot off the shores of the US, these clever tabs are selling fast (sales are up over 500%) in the UK, as word has spread amongst savvy beauty junkies that you can apply them to get delectable nails in a matter of seconds. Designed with a new technology, these acetone-free, glue-free, stick-on tabs come with a peel off sheet, making them easy to apply straight to your own nails with minimal fuss or mess.”

The tabs are designed to be worn for anywhere between 5 hours and 5 days and when you want to take off the nails, you just slide them up towards your fingertips and roll off the adhesive. They're water-resistant so you don't have to worry about washing your hands 'although it could be a good excuse for not doing the washing-up for a few days !) They made me less worried about accidentally snapping off a nail and breaking my real nail underneath so for peace of mind and ease of use, I'll definitely be using them every time I decide to wear fake nails.

Star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : £2.49 for 24 tabs in 6 different sizes

available from Boots, Superdrug, Tesco and Asda

Eye Candy “Dramatise” False Eyelashes review

Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry and Madonna are just a handful of the A-list stars making a fashionable statement with false eyelashes this season. From natural enhancements to full-on dramatic looks, the big trend on the red carpet and on the catwalk is traffic-stopping lashes.

I was really intrigued to have a play with the Eye Candy false lashes that we received to review. The packaging promises lashes that are light as a feather, comfortable to wear and effortless to apply. Well, as a total novice with false eyelashes, I have to say that's pretty close to the truth. My big apprehension was that I'd glue my eyelids together and I didn't manage to do that so you should be OK too !

The lashes come on a strip, which is much simpler (and less likely to cause injury by poking yourself in the eye !) than fiddling about with individual lashes, especially if you're a beginner (but individual lashes are available too). You just check they're the right length before you start and trim off the end if they're too long. You delicately squeeze some of the enclosed lash adhesive on to the strip then wait for thirty seconds for it to go tacky before looking down or straight into a mirror and sticking them just above your real lashes. Easy peasy, especially as the glue doesn't stick fast immediately so you can move them slightly to get them as close as possible to your real lashes.

They don't look very natural (although the fact that there are lashes of various lengths is more realistic than when they are all one length) but they do look very impressive and the whole point is that you can “dramatise your eyes” so I'd say it's mission accomplished. I was trying the “Dramatise” lashes but they also come in “Naturalise” or “Volumise”.

Removing them is easy too. You just grab one end and gently peel them off. They don't rip all your real lashes out as they come off, which is what I was worried about ! You can use them with or without mascara (but for a really dramatic look, they'd look ultra-funky with one of the sparkly or metallic-look mascaras).

Eye Candy advise to grab them quick as some key lines are so popular, there's now a growing waiting list of over 600 people at Boots and justbeautifully.com ! I think that says it all really !

Rimmel London VIP review : Vinyl Max Gloss

As I told you before, I am privileged to be a Rimmel Ambassador which means that I receive some of their latest products to give you the low-down on them. I have to admit, I've got a bit behind on the monthly missions but now that I'm on holiday, me-time is at an all time high so I'm having great fun pampering myself and trying out my stash of make-up and beauty products. Keep your eyes open as there will be more coming up over the coming weeks.

This month's mission was trying out the Vinyl Max Gloss, which promises voluptuous shine in one effortless stroke. When I'm at work, I literally have a couple of minutes to get ready in the morning, before getting the kids packed off to school or the childminder's and getting to the bus stop by 7am, so that immediately sounds great to me.

On paper, it sounds fantastic so I was keen to see if it would live up to the hype. Rimmel promise their most voluptuous wand ever for full coverage and high gloss shine. They explain : “Its soft fibres deposit a thicker gloss coat for voluptuous shine in one effortless stroke. Thanks to its ultra soft and smooth application, colour glides effortlessly with great cushioning feel. Our most plumping formula with magnifying complex based on Hyaluronic spheres to volumize, smooth lips and reduce fine lines and wrinkles for fuller, plumper lips. Intense colour formula for full coverage and an exceptional voluptuous look. Lightweight, non-sticky texture.” All sounds great so now it's the moment of truth – time to see if it lives up to the claims.

I tried it out on me and did find it plumped my lips up a bit - for a natural plumped look though, not a trout pout ! - but I don't really know if that was a trick of the light due to the glossiness or really extra volume. I love the colour and the shine and found it really easy to apply - one stroke of the wand really is enough. I let Sophie test it out for the photo above and she thought it was lovely too, although I still think she's too young for wearing make-up except for very special occasions (or helping me with reviewing !).

It's still slightly sticky but much less so than other lipglosses I've tried. It gives a really fresh look that is easy to work into a subtle daytime look or a jazzed up, more dramatic look for a night out.

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : £5.49

Confessions of a Beauty Addict !

I thought this made interesting reading when it popped into my inbox last week. I'm actually surprised it's only nine times a day, between those who spend half their day preening in the mirror and those who spend just as much time worriedly glancing at their reflection because they're having a fat/bad hair/huge pimple on the chin day ! What do you think ?!

***********************************************************

CONFESSIONS OF A BEAUTY ADDICT
- British women think about how they look nine times a day -

With more than a third of British women (33 per cent) admitting that they would never leave the house without make up on, and one in five (21 per cent) admitting putting on their makeup is the most important part of their day, we really are a nation of beauty addicts.

The survey, commissioned by retailer QVC to celebrate its July Beauty Month, quizzed over 2,000 British women to reveal that, on average, women think about how they look nine times a day, with four per cent admitting that they think about how they look every half an hour.

In fact, instead of thinking of our loved ones, a third of British women (30 per cent) admit that their beauty regime is the last thing on their mind before they go to sleep and for one in seven British women (16 per cent), it is the first thing they think about in the morning.

One in seven Brits (7 per cent) admit to refreshing their appearance every two hours or more, with a quarter of Brits (23 per cent) admitting to reapplying their make up every two or three hours.

Going for a job interview topped the list of situations where women felt most stressed about their make up look, closely followed by going on a night out with friends and going on a date. Interestingly, over a third of women (31 per cent) revealed that they are more concerned with looking good for other women as opposed to impressing the opposite sex, perhaps because 65 per cent of British women believe they are judged by other women more than men.

Proving that most women really do turn into their mothers, one in five (19 per cent) women adopted their beauty regime directly from their mother’s and one in eight (13 per cent) have stuck with the same routine since. A further 17 per cent admit that they have never changed their beauty regime since they first started applying make up and beauty products.

Dr Linda Papadopoulos, Psychodermatologist, comments, ‘I believe that happy skin is healthy skin and how we feel is intrinsically linked to how we look. If you feel like you look your best then it gives you a much more positive outlook on life.’

Sue Leeson, Marketing Director of QVC comments, ‘This research proves what we have always suspected, that women love to look their best. At QVC we know that every woman is an individual and offer a whole range of products to make her look and feel great, as well as offer expert tips and advice to know what works best for her!’

Key Regional and Age Differences

· The younger generation definitely seem to be more image conscious with one in twelve (8 per cent) of under 25 year olds admitting that they think about how they look at least once an hour compared to only 1 per cent of over 55 year olds
