Hello Kitty Cool Cardz Card Design Studio review

Santa delivered a whole host of craft products for the Madhouse mini-testers this Christmas. They were actually delivered for us to review during the Halloween half-term but we were so busy getting out and about in the unseasonably warm weather that we didn't have time to play with them all, so they ended up under the Christmas tree and we'll be reviewing them all over the coming weeks. First up was this Cool Cardz Card Design Studio which instantly made Sophie and Juliette squeal because it features their favourite cat, Hello Kitty.

The kit contains everything you need to create and store your funky cool cardz, which are a bit like customised kiddie business cards. The laminating machine contains two slide out drawers where you can store all the enclosed odds and ends - 2 pens (pink and black), stampers, stickers, ribbons, cards and laminating sheets. This is great for keeping everything nice and tidy and for preventing all the little bits getting lost.

Sophie (complete with Santa hat) got down to the serious business of decorating her cards with pens, stickers and stampers to make it beautiful.

We then had a bit of trouble working out how to use the laminating machine. The idea is simple enough. You have a laminating strip that needs to be peeled off the backing paper and stuck on top of your newly created card, but trying to figure out how to actually achieve this with the laminating machine proved problematic because we couldn't work out how to slide the laminating sheet in properly.

Youtube came to the rescue and we watched this useful vlog tutorial :

After this, it was all much simpler and Sophie managed to created her first card within seconds, as you can see below.

Her second attempt was a special "Best Mum Ever" cool card which put a big smile on my face !

Sophie loves usuing the machine and the finished cards are very cool so she's been making them for her friends, grandparents and teacher. However, the downside is, you only get 15 laminates and cards in the box so you will have to keep buying refills which works out quite expensive at £12.99 a time.

This is a lovely group activity with a lasting souvenir for a birthday party or girlie sleepover.

Baby it’s cold outside... but these warming recipes from Philly will keep your kitchen steaming hot

I've posted many recipes from Philadelphia here on my blog in the past but I must admit, I always think of it mainly as a light summery ingredient or as a base for indulgent desserts. I therefore love the look of these warming winter dishes using Philly cheese.

Giggle Buddies review

It's a sign of the times that these days, as soon as a child picks up a soft toy, the first thing they do is press its tummy, hands and feet to see what it does, expecting music, lights or voices - or quite possibly all three ! Well, these Giggle Buddies won't disappoint.

As you can see from the picture, there are four different animals available - pig, frog, gorilla and dog - and we were pleased to have the opportunity of giving a pig a new home !

Sophie immediately picked it up and started cuddling it because it's so soft and snuggly, even just as a regular soft toy. But the clever part is that it contains a motion sensor in its stomach so that when you wave your hand in front of them, they start shaking, spinning round and giggling with an infectious laugh.

2-year-old Pierre loves dancing in front of him clapping his hands so that he starts laughing and invariably ends up laughing along. The grown ups have also been having fun, hiding him behind doors or sitting him in corners so he'll start laughing and jumping around, making unsuspecting passers-by jump (which is funnier after one too many Christmas Day Baileys, admittedly !).

If the giggling gets a bit much, you'll be pleased to know that you can easily turn them off so they'll just sit quietly in the corner. (Unfortunately, you won't be able to do this with your kids too, which is a shame !) The Giggle Buddies need 3 AA batteries so make sure you stock up on those at the same time as you buy your toy.

Annoying Monsters review

The Annoying Monsters were tipped to be one of the hottest toys this Christmas so I'm sure we're not the only ones to have given a home to one this Christmas. We received Bothersome Boris for review but there are six to collect in total, the others being Pestering Percy, Aggravating Alfred, Infuriating Igor, Irritating Ethel and Frightening Florence. I love the names and you can find out more about their characters on the Annoying Monsters website at http://www.annoyingmonsters.com/.

Despite their unusual physique - Boris has only got one eye ! - they're quite cute and the Madhouse mini-testers were instantly drawn to them. And that was before they realised all the naughty things they could do with them !

You can interact with the toy in a number of ways , poking him in the eye to make him scream (always guaranteed to make the kids giggle), touching his feet to make him laugh and - the unanimous favourite - poking him in the stomach to make him fart and burp. I thought Juliette was going to wet herself because she was laughing so much and Pierre looked at him with a big grin, then at us, then burst out laughing and prodded him again and again ! If you can drag yourself away from the toy for a few minutes, it will start noisily snoring, encouraging you to start playing with him again - and believe me, your little monsters (that's the kids, not the toys !) won't need much encouragement !

But that's still not all ! You can also record your (or your poor unsuspecting visitors') voice and hear it played back in a funny squeaky voice. Cue much hilarity when the Madhouse mini-testers made it say various "rude" words like bottom, willy and fart !

Young kids will love being to allowed to have a naughty playmate and I guarantee that the grown-ups will keep playing when the kids have gone to their beds !

Rice baby 2 handle melamine cup review

VUP Baby kindly sent us through a Baby 2 handle melamine cup by Rice which I thought would be perfect for 2-year-old Pierre, to try to wean him off sippy cups and onto proper beakers and cups.

He immediately grabbed hold of it and peered inquisitively inside before pretending to drink out of it. He instantly worked out how to hold a two-handled cup, which makes sense as it is the natural progression from holding a feeding bottle or sippy cup with two hands. It makes it much less wobbly as your toddler attempts to get a lid-free cup from table to mouth with minimum spillage !

From a parent's point of view, it also has a lot of plus points. It's safe to use in a microwave and is dishwasher-safe (on the top shelf). It's made from food safe Melamine and, like all the products available on VUP Baby, is free from BPA, PVC & Phthalates. It's been dropped on the floor quite a few times and seems to be quite resistant.

It will take a while for Pierre to manage to get more in his mouth than down his front but he's having a lot of fun trying !

CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER FOR CHARITY THIS CHRISTMAS

Electric kettles, hair dryers, DIY gear and foot spas – perfect Christmas presents or total turkeys? Fortunately, this Christmas visitors to www.preloved.co.uk can quickly turn any unwanted presents into cash while raising money for leading children's charity 'Action for Children', all from the comfort of their own sofa without missing a second of either Eastenders of Downton Abbey.

www.preloved.co.uk, the UK's biggest independent second hand sales website, has teamed up with Action for Children, to encourage people to clear out their clutter this Christmas and help raise vital funds to support some of the UK's most vulnerable and neglected children and young people

'Clear out the Clutter and take Action for Children' will see Preloved donate £1 to Action for Children for every person who places a FREE advert on the website at http://www.preloved.co.uk/actionforchildren.  The campaign will start on Boxing Day and run for an entire month until 31st January

With the website attracting millions of visitors each month as one of the UK's most popular classified advertising sites, it is hoped that 'Clear out the Clutter and take Action for Children' can generate thousands of pounds for Action for Children

Ian Buzer, Managing Director of Preloved, said, "This is a win-win campaign for anyone who wants to get rid of a Christmas present that might not be to their taste, or start the New Year with a good clear out and turn their clutter into cash. For every new or existing member who takes out a FREE advert on our site it will trigger a £1 donation to Action for Children, so this is a great way to advertise unwanted items for absolutely nothing, make some extra money and raise funds for such an important UK charity."

Emilia Carman, Head of High Value Fundraising at Action for Children, said, “This campaign is perfect for Action for Children; encouraging people to recycle is good for the environment and something we are happy to promote, and by getting a donation for every person who creates an advert, it will enable us to continue our aim of being there for the most disadvantaged, vulnerable and neglected children and young people in the UK for as long as it takes.”

New book: ORIGINS - song of Nooitgedacht, a remote valley in the Karoo - Jennifer Gough-Cooper’

If you're looking for a highly impressive coffee table book, this one is full of stunning photography. Read on for more information :

**************************************************

That photography is an art is undisputed – that the photographer can peel away the layers of time to reveal a unique landscape requires the observation of an artist.

These qualities come together in ORIGINS – song of Nooitgedacht, a remote valley in the Karoo where British photographer Jennifer Gough-Cooper explores the evolution of an ancient valley reaching back millions of years to its creation at the time of Gondwana.

Using her extraordinary talents Jennifer Gough-Cooper reveals in ORIGINS – song of Nooitgedacht, a remote valley in the Karoo, the creation of a landscape which is quintessentially South African. These remarkable photographs, taken with 35 mm negative film, are the result of her close observation of Nature and of Place, offering us a reflective journey back in time.

From her first visit to the valley in 2002 Jennifer Gough-Cooper was captivated by this tranquil landscape with its majestic mountains, great vistas, its transparent streams, turbulent flood waters and the exquisite detail of its rock and flora. The photographs in this volume are presented in the spirit of a song – a melodic line – evoking these natural treasures in tempo with the slow cycles of infinite time at Nooitgedacht: a place truly beyond imagination.

“It was not until later in my exploration of the valley that I found inspiration for the form of the book. One day, certain individual rocks in the landscape caught my attention: the surface of one huge boulder resembled our planet as one might imagine it in its molten state straight from the fire of creation; another was scribbled with lines by a mysterious wayward writer; yet another was host to such an incredible pattern of fiery lichen, it appeared like a painting of galaxies traveling in infinite space. Clearly the valley was defined by rock, the ancient bones of the earth, and blessed with life-giving, pure waters flowing from the mountains. This is the story that I have endeavored to describe with my camera.” Says Gough-Cooper

h e r e  t h e r e  h a d  b e e n  a n  a n c i e n t  s e a

To define this place Fire, Air, Rock and Water are recurrent themes: Fire, in terms of sunlight and lichen; Air, described by atmosphere and morning mist; Rock, in which the valley’s history is embedded; and, not least, Water, the precious and essential source of life and of survival itself. The visual extremes of Water in its mood and movement, its correspondences with Rock, its reflective qualities and its strength with wind to erode, recur in a remarkable variety of images throughout these pages.

Colin Turpin Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, said of Jennifer Gough-Cooper’s book :
“This is a book that I will treasure as a vivid and beautiful realisation of the Nooitgedacht valley. She succeeds in capturing the remarkable features of the region, origins, flora, fauna, rock and water. The book is of special interest to me having grown up in the Karoo.
Jennifer Gough-Cooper demonstrates conclusively the complete wrongness of the description one commonly comes across of the Karoo as a desert or semi-desert region. I think the book is a supreme example of the imaginative and artistic use of photography”

A trackway formed some 250 million years ago by a dicynodont called
Aulacephalodon... at the time of Gondwana, is revealed momentarily by steady erosion...”

With 92 photographs in full colour the attention to detail in the making of the book has resulted in an extraordinary publication. Very close co-operation and communication between the graphic designer, book binder and the printer, ensuring the most exacting printing practice and paper handling prior to binding has a cumulative effect and creates a noticeable overall impression of quality and excellence.  Specialist book binders Graphicraft of Cape Town hand-bound the books and hand-crafted the solander boxes and slip cases for the limited edition books. These were covered in linen cloth.
Published by Wild Almond Press the book comes in three editions, Collector’s Edition (25 copies only) Subscriber’s edition (100 copies) and Standard edition

Jennifer Gough-Cooper has maintained close attachments to South Africa since her first visit as a child. She was brought up in England and studied at Hornsey College of Art in the 1960’s. As an exhibition organizer, she was involved in the Marcel Duchamp retrospective which formed the inaugural show at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris in 1977. Jennifer’s later extensive research of the artist culminated in the book Marcel Duchamp: Work and Life, published for the exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi, Venice in 1993.

After an extended visit to Cape Town in 1998, Jennifer held her first exhibition of black and white photographs at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. These photographs, all taken within Kirstenbosch, formed the inaugural art exhibition at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

Jennifer Gough-Cooper, with the Scottish artist, Ian Hamilton Finlay, published Paths for an exhibition at Schoenthal in Switzerland. Her book Apropos Rodin inspired by the work of the French sculptor in its setting at the Musée Rodin, Paris, was published in 2006. Selected Rodin photographs have been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art, London, the Musée Rodin, Paris, and the Craig Krull Gallery, Santa Monica.

Olives Et Al Putney Sauce and Chilli Billy Jelly review

Olives Et Al’s Everything But The… boxes are a brilliant idea for a weekend away – or for keeping handy over the weeks of parties before, during and after Christmas. Everything is in one spotty box and ready to go – and after all the parties have been and gone, the ingredients are there to make merry again with the last remnants of the Christmas pantry.

Olives Et Al suggest that their Everything But the Bird box is ideal for Boxing Day. They explain : "The box includes Olives Et Al’s best-selling Putney Sauce (goes great with cold foods – pasta and quiche), Dukkah (to liven up potato wedges), Sticky Onion Marmalade (makes groovy gravy), Chilli Billy Jelly (goes with everything!), Pink Mojo dressing/marinade (great with all festive birds, and salmon too), Tomorosso (sunblushed tomatoes for tarts or pastas) and Very Deli Pepperabica peppers (plonked on top of Ciabatta) – the whole box is £35.00 and the best bit is that you only need to add a bird !"

Also in the range is Everything But The Music, for great party snacks, fiery Jalapeno Olives and Chilli Puffs (rrp £27.50), Everything But the Movie, just the box to curl up with after one too many festive celebrations (rrp £27.50) and Everything but the Tree, gorgeous olive tree products from salad servers to a pestle and mortar, with a bottle of Olives Et Al’s extra virgin olive oil too (rrp £55.00).

We received two products from the Everything But The Bird box to sample here at The Madhouse and I have to agree that they do both go really well with leftover turkey.

First up was a jar of Putney Sauce, which I thought was a bit of a strange name. On the website, they explain (kind of !) : "A sauce of sun-smacked tomatoes, peppers and onions and a relish for anything from cheese to chops and perfect for dipping into. Why Putney? Better than Scunthorpe (Sorry, Scunthorpians)" ! On the jar, they say the same thing except this time, it's better than Cleethorpes ! It's much runnier than other relishes that I've tried in the past but they explain on the label "it's Putney, not chutney" ! It's a bit of a cliche to say that it's a taste of sunshine but it's nevertheless true. It contains recognisable pieces of tomato, onion and red pepper and tastes and looks like homemade relish. It's lovely on sandwiches, but also on the side of the plate with grilled meat, sausages, omelette or for livening up bland dishes like mashed potato or rice. At 127 calories for 100g (which is almost half of the 270g jar), you'll be adding a whole lot of flavour for just a few calories. If you prefer more of a kick, there's also a Hot Putney Sauce available.

The second product was the Chilli Billy Jelly, which is a name that rolls nicely off the tongue ! Described as a chilli, ginger and garlic jelly, it contains a reassuringly short list of ingredients : Sugar, water, red chilli puree (10%), garlic puree (6%), ginger puree (1%), concentrated lemon juice, gelling agent (fruit pectin). It's a surprisingly sweet, runny jelly with a real kick which is great for adding flavour and chilli heat to ... well, I wasn't really sure what I could use it with ! Luckily the label is a great source of inspiration, claiming : "Billy likes to spread himself about so marinade him, skewer him, dress him up in noodles or let him give your salad a good kicking. He's pretty easy and terribly versatile." The website also says : "With chilli, ginger and garlic, a perfect accompaniment for cheese, meat or fish, or add a big dollop to soups and stews."

I tried it on the side of a ploughman's (a turkey ploughman's, obviously, given the time of year!) and drizzled it over salad as a dressing, and it worked really well flavour wise for both, although it's a bit runny to be used as a side garnish. I'd love to use this as a glaze on chicken or as a dip with naan bread and curry. I'll be enjoying adding a spoonful in various dishes to see what works though, as it could go with pretty much anything.

Olives Et Al’s products are available in good food retailers, delis, farm shops, food halls and on line at http://www.olivesetal.co.uk/
