Children's book review : Danger - Dorling Kindersley

You know how it is sometimes - you go online for 2 minutes to look up something quickly and end up surfing for a whole afternoon, clicking around on different websites and blogs, getting sucked into all the interesting information and pictures that you keep discovering then suddenly looking at the clock and wondering where on earth the time went ! Well, I warn you now, this book is just the same.

According to the Dorling Kindersley website, Danger! is targetted at readers aged 12 years and above, but I instantly knew that 9-year-old Sophie would absolutely love it. I wasn't counting on quite how addictive it would be for the adults too though - if it's left on the coffee table, everyone who passes through the house has a quick flick through when they have a spare minute !

What I absolutely love about this kind of book is that it really awakens Sophie's curiosity and she wants to share her new-found knowledge so she keeps popping into the kitchen to say, "Mum, did you know ... ?" with a big grin on her face. It's great to inverse the mum-daughter roles for a while so that she can be the one to teach me new nuggets of information.

The book covers a wide range of themes that will appeal to both sexes, from the natural world, medical history, geography and history to some seriously icky facts that young readers will absolutely delight in sharing ! It's great for dipping in and out of so reluctant readers won't be put off. Sophie spent an entire rainy afternoon reading it cover to cover in her room !
It's a colourful book full of interesting pictures and fascinating facts that is instantly appealing. It's also a very sturdy hardback book, which is just as well, given the number of people who have been leafing through it !
