Book review : Fairytale Twist - Stacie Davis

Fairytale Twist is absolutely classic chicklit, which means there are no great surprises but it's a nice, frivolous bit of escapism when the skies are grey and you're feeling down in the dumps.

The novel is set in the glamorous world of fictional Hollywood A-listers. The central character Louise is a global superstar (although she never actually seems to do any work !) who has the glitzy lifestyle many would dream of. Her life seems to be one long string of expensive parties and disastrous love affairs, as she struggles to get over the man who broke her heart, fellow A-lister Connor. Her best friend and sometime bed partner Leo is convinced Louise is the one he should spend the rest of his life with, but nothing can stand in the way of true love !

I felt that a lot of the characters were too one-dimensional and served merely as plot devices. Louise's first conquest, Matt, looks as if he'll be an important character early on, then disappears for almost the entire book before coming back in at the end when the plot calls for him. Louise's twin sister Jenni barely gets a mention, and her little sister Ashley is hardly more developed. This is a criticism I often make of chick lit though, and in this book - narrated alternately by Louise, Leo and Connor, plus a few extras - we could argue that in their A-lister viewpoint, they're the only ones of any importance so they'll just gloss over the unimportant non-celebs in their lives.

It's an easy-going read that won't tax your brain when you want something frothy to read, particularly as it is partly told in text-messages and emails so it's a really quick read. If you like romantic chicklit, you'll love it.
