Book Byte 8 - Letter From The Tower (by Anne Boleyn) - a Bedtime Story ... for mummy !

A little while ago, I shared a Book Byte video with you called No Hat for Fluzzy (here) for you to enjoy with the kids.

But why should the little ones have all the fun ? Wouldn't you sometimes love to snuggle up in your softest pyjamas and have someone read you a bedtime story for a change ?! Well, here's your chance !

You can listen to Lucy-Anne Holmes reading you an extract from Letter From The Tower by Anne Boleyn, taken from Love Letters of Great Women. This takes me back to story time at infant school when we all went and sat on the mat on the floor while the teacher read us a story. All that's missing is the tiny glass bottles of milk with the blue straws for some real nostalgia ! I recommend a cheeky glass of white wine or a luxurious marshmallow-topped hot chocolate as a more than satisfactory replacement ! Are you sitting comfortably ? Then she'll begin ... !

Cupcake Mum – a spa, fitness club and crèche facility with clubs in London

In my recent review of Nadia Sawalha's fitness DVD (that you can read here), I mentioned that it is often hard for new mums (or even not-so-new mums !) to find time away from the kids to get back in shape. Well, I have just been reading about this fabulous family-friendly spa and fitness club which has really taken this into account. Unfortunately, they're only in London at the moment but you might want to check out this little haven of bliss and tranquility and unadulterated me-time if you live close enough ! The Cupcake story
Three Cupcakes in Three years

Karen Hastings had the idea to create a wellbeing space where mums and mums-to-be could re-connect with themselves and feel part of a community.

The Cupcake idea came about from watching her girlfriends in London get pregnant and seeing that they didn’t have anything to do, and nowhere to go. Taking a very London concept - club membership and making it relevant for family life; a place where parents can come with their children, feel safe and have a good time.

In 2008, the first Cupcake opened its doors in Putney, South London. Only a year after, Cupcake opened the second Club in Wandsworth. Cupcake is now creating a real hub for families in the area with its third centre in Parsons Green, South West London, pencilled to open January 2011.

The initial concept came to realisation shortly thereafter, with the first opening in Putney, South London in 2008. Cupcake raised £1.2m and project-managed the building from a concrete shell into unique haven. Only a year later, Karen opened the second Cupcake members’ club and spa in Wandsworth. Cupcake is now creating a real hub for families in the area with its third centre in Parsons Green, South West London, pencilled to open in January 2011.

The goal is to open 7 new clubs in the next five years and expand beyond South London to reach even more families.

AOk Red Grape & Cherry Juice

Last year, I reviewed (here) a fabulously tasty and healthy antioxidant-packed drink called Mile High Aviation Juice. Well, since then, it has undergone a transformation and has a new name and a new image. Say bye bye to Mile High (and my juvenile sniggering !), time to welcome in AOK.

I've just received a bottle of the new-look drink to try out and reacquainted myself with the fabulously fruity, refreshing, natural taste of the cherry and grape juice. At the time I wrote my last review, Pierre was tiny and I said it was a brilliant drink for mums-to-be or those breastfeeding who couldn't drink alcohol over the festive period.

Well, I'm not pregnant or breastfeeding any more but I still think it's a great drink, both for its taste and health virtues. As they explain on their facebook page : "AOk has been created by our nutritionist and founder Stuart Roberts to provide a convenient way of getting your optimal daily antioxidant requirements from just one bottle; no matter how busy your life is. Each ingredient has been carefully chosen to ensure that there is a synergistic mix of multiple antioxidants. This makes AOk an extremely potent antioxidant drink, which can be enjoyed as part of a healthy active lifestyle. Laboratory industry standard tests have shown AOk to be an exceptional antioxidant drink."

It also counts as one of your five a day and a 250ml bottle only contains 145 calories. If you've made a New Year's resolution to get fit, it can also help you in your exercise routine and the antioxidants are also great for preventing the signs of ageing. Despite the name change, it's still great as an "aviation juice" too, heping combat the effects of jetlag.

But above all, it tastes gorgeous ! There's at least one New Year's Resolution that's easy to keep !

Launch of the Hovis "Stop Snacking" Facebook app

OK, hands up if your New Years' Resolution involves losing weight, eating healthier or getting back into those jeans that you would need a shoe-horn to squeeze into ?! Well, Hovis may just have an ally for you with their new facebook application.

They explain : "With only 570 days to go until London 2012, Olympic Gold Medallist and Hovis ambassador Victoria Pendleton unveils her ‘secrets’ to staying motivated and stopping snacking this January by eating Hovis Wholemeal. The cyclist has worked with Hovis to develop a unique Stop Snacking Facebook app after independent research revealed that 86% of women found eating Hovis Wholemeal for breakfast prevented them from snacking in-between breakfast and lunch."

They have carried out some research which reveals that British women will consume over one thousand unhealthy snacks in 2011 ! They explain : "The average British woman will devour 1,092 unhealthy snacks this year, from crisps, sweets and biscuits to cakes and chocolate, according to research released today by Hovis Wholemeal. The study, involving 2,000 British women, reveals that an average of over 129 packets of crisps, more than 127 chocolate bars, over 77 cakes and more than 133 biscuits will be consumed by every female in 2011 alone".

As the nation grapples with New Year’s resolutions and healthy eating regimes, the research also reveals that over half of all women (54%) can’t resist snacking on unhealthy treats at least twice or three times per day, with a staggering four million women in the UK (one in seven) potentially eating five or more sugary and salty snacks each and every day.

The research, commissioned by Hovis Wholemeal to mark the launch of the Hovis Stop Snacking Facebook app also showed that over half (55%) of women wish they could give up their unhealthy snacking vice, 48% admit that mid-morning hunger pangs are the culprit for them reaching for the biscuit tin, and the sofa (49%) and the office (33%) are the most popular places to indulge.

Developed in conjunction with Hovis ambassador and Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton, the Hovis Stop Snacking app will help encourage women to ditch their daily snacking vices. Victoria said, “As an athlete I understand how important it is to stay motivated in January and most importantly start the day the right way, which is why the Hovis Stop Snacking app is great. The app will encourage women to try a Hovis Wholemeal breakfast and then set a snack-related challenge in return for daily prizes, rewards for completion and a range of recipes and motivational advice from me".

She continues, “The basic facts are simple, Hovis Wholemeal is rich in fibre which can help you feel fuller for longer and could help stop snacking. I have it for breakfast and it works for me! ”
A trial conducted on behalf of Hovis showed that 64% of women who swapped their regular breakfast for Hovis Wholemeal felt fuller for longer and 86% agreed that eating Hovis Wholemeal for breakfast helped them snack less on naughty treats in-between breakfast and lunch. Let's face it - what have you got to lose ? And funnily enough, since buying a cheapie loaf of Hovis in the "reduced for quick sale" aisle of Tesco last week, I've been eating a slice of wholemeal toast with a squeeze of honey for breakfast for the past few days and I haven't had any choccie-cravings before lunch so they could well be on to something. Every little helps !

Nadia Sawalha's Fat To Fab Workout DVD

I love Nadia Sawalha ! She's so down-to-earth, makes really interesting TV programmes and has a great sense of humour. When I saw that she'd made a fitness video (and let's face it, it's the New Year so there will be zillions of celebs releasing them now !), my first reaction was oh no ! I hope she doesn't start taking herself really seriously and stop being so, well, normal now ! Well, rest assured, I've just watched it and she's still the same Nadia. She's lost an amazing 3 and a half stone but not an ounce of her personality in the process !

Right from the very beginning, Nadia puts you at ease. I love the way she makes herself laugh when she introduces her fitness video, saying that she'd never have believed in a million years that she'd make one ! She shares her unflattering photos with you - how brave is that ?! - and reassures you that she hated exercise, got puffed out within minutes of starting in the early days and never thought she'd get the fabulous body she now has. That's reassuring and motivating for her target audience (ie me !) and really does give you a boost when you really need one.

One of the reasons many women put on weight is through having kids, and one of the reason it's so hard to shift the baby-weight afterwards is that it's really hard to find time to yourself to actually get back in shape. It's easy to spend hours in the gym if you're a Hollywood star with a personal trainer on call 24/7 and a live-in nanny to keep the kids occupied ! In the real world, that's not so easy. Well, to get around this problem, I packed Pierre off for a nap (because although he thought it was really funny to watch Mummy jumping around, he then started trying to crawl under my feet and hug my ankles !) and lined up Sophie and Juliette to join in. I'm not sure if they were laughing at me or the DVD but they had a fabulous time and, as well as all three of us getting hot and sweaty, we also had hysterics on numerous occasions and they asked if we could do it again another day. Who needs a wii-fit ?!

The exercise moves themselves are quite easy to follow, except for the criss-cross hand-and-legs part which had the girls giggling so much they nearly wet themselves laughing because we were all so uncoordinated ! You don't need any complicated equipment, bags of room or superhuman stamina. You will get tired and sweaty but that's the whole point. You can feel your muscles burning and really know it's working. It's designed with busy people in mind as the exercise part is split into five sections - warm up, high energy fat burner, all over body blast, all over body toner and cool down - so you can either do the whole lot in one go (if you think you're hard enough !) or just do a warm up then a quick but effective 15-minute workout. The final cool down section is also great as a stress-buster after a busy day at work even if you haven't done the workout.

One thing I would have liked is a countdown timer on the high energy bits, so that you know how much is left to go, because sometimes that can help you hang in there for the last bit when you know there are only a few minutes to go. I'd have liked a few toys, shoes and random bits of kiddie-mess strewn around the pristine white fitness studio too, so that I felt a bit more at home, because apart from that, Nadia really is just like any of us and that is really inspiring !

Another thing I love about Nadia's approach is that she's a mum so she needs to cook real food instead of just munching on celery and carrot sticks. As we'd expect from a Masterchef winner, she has some great recipes tucked up her sleeve and there is a section at the end of the DVD where she shares seven of her low-fat recipes with us. This is real food that the whole family can enjoy, whether or not they're trying to lose weight, and they look really simple to make - I'll definitely be trying the rice and lentils one (although it might be a lethal combination with the squat thrusts on the DVD !)

I would love to say I've "done a Nadia" and lost three-and-a-half stone as well as four dress sizes, but unfortunately, I had to send the review copy back after a fortnight !! She has however managed to do it in 4 months so if you start now, you too can have an I'm-too-sexy-for-my-kaftan body in time for the summer !

There will surely be many new celeb fitness DVDs in the next few weeks but I have to say, this has to be one of the most down-to-earth and believable ones. Good on you Nadia, you're an inspiration !

You can watch a trailer here, to give you an idea of what you're letting yourself in for ! :

And if you want some extra motivation from like-minded people, you might like to join the DVD's facebook page .

Good luck !

NO-NO range of American style flatbreads

When I was offered the chance to try out a pack of NO-NO’s new Mediterranean Style Flatbreads, I thought they sounded really nice but I wasn't really sure what to expect. I thought they might be a bit dry and bland and would need dipping in some sort of creamy, yoghurty or avocadoey-based dip to give them some oomph but it turns out I was wrong on that count - although they do taste delicious dipped too !

The new Mediterranean Style Sundried Tomato & Basil Flavour variety is described as an "Italian-inspired flavour wheat cracker". The packaging says : "Delicious 100% natural wheat cracker snacks baked with sundried tomato & basil flavour. Enjoy anytime, with or without dips." They are lovely and crunchy and taste almost buttery, so I was amazed to see that each large flatbread (weighing approximately 9g) only contains 35 calories. Two, or if you're feeling particularly peckish three, flatbreads would make a lovely satisfying snack that would be a lot healthier than a bag of crisps or a chocolate bar. They're big on taste too and have  no added sugar, preservatives or additives.

We also received a box of their Sesame Seed Topped Flatbreads which are equally delicious. They are slightly higher in fat, but still less than 10% which is pretty good, and they are also made with 100% natural ingredients. They have a really strong but not overpowering, natural sesame seed taste which means that they taste delicious on their own, straight from the box.

My first thought was that they would be a bit dry and bland. When they passed the taste and texture test with flying colours, I thought they must be really high calorie and packed with unhealthy fats, but I was wrong on that count too. They should certainly change their name and logo from No-No to Yes Yes ! I've been looking for healthy, low fat snack options that are big on taste in this New Year period of healthy resolutions and I need look no further.

star rating : 5/5

RRP : £1.99 for 130g (about 15 flatbreads)

available in the savory biscuit sections of Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose stores

Children's Book review : Catherine Cannon - Felix the Fast Tractor series

I've always been an absolute bookworm, as you'll know if you've seen the number of book reviews I post on this blog, so I'm really happy to see that I have passed this passion on to the kids.

Even 17-month-old Pierre is just starting to realise that books are quite good fun to look at as well as chew and throw across the room so he instantly crawled over to investigate the four Felix the Fast Tractor books that we were sent to review. This cheerful tractor may have his own website and even a facebook page but, here in The Madhouse, we'd never heard of him. We were therefore keen to get to know him.

Well, the kids were instantly taken with him. Juliette thought he looked a bit like the Rumblin' Chuck toy that we reviewed last week and Sophie thought he looked more like Brum. I thought he also had overtones of Thomas the Tank Engine, with the bucolic lifestyle of Postman Pat thrown in for good measure, so there are enough familiar elements for the kids to instantly feel at ease.

But that's where the similarities end. As well as telling great stories, the books are really educational. The regular "Want to know more about ...?" bubbles throw up lots of interesting facts about all aspects of life in the countryside, many of which I'd never even stopped to think about so I loved reading them too ! The frequent questions, such as "Can you spot Felix in the picture ?", also went down really well and made bedtime storytime into a much more interactive experience.

The books are A4 sized, softbacked and contain 32 pages each so they're not too heavy for little hands to hold, while being big enough for everyone to gather round so that they don't miss out on the lovely detailed illustrations.

I can totally understand why the books have won the Lakeland Book of the Year award (with the 2009 award for "Author of Best Cumbrian Book Ever" by public online vote). We'll certainly be looking out for future titles to add to the four currently available and we'll be playing at all the fun activities on the website too.

Disney Sing It Party Hits and Disney Sing It Family Hits

When I was given the chance to review Disney's new singalong games for the Wii, I jumped at the chance, scuttling off straight away to buy a microphone (I got a brand-new one on ebay with a dance game for a really low price so don't let that put you off if you haven't got one !). However, I was unsure what the girls would make of them because they're sometimes quite shy. Well, put a microphone in their hands and they suddenly come right out of their shell ! I wandered into the living room to find two mini popstars bopping along in front of the TV and belting out Justin Bieber lyrics !

The game is really easy to set up. I can safely say this because I put the games into 9-year-old Sophie's hands, telling her I just needed to change Pierre's nappy then I'd be right back to put it on for them, and by the time I came back, they were already mid-song having worked it all out by themselves !

Anyone who has ever seen someone doing karaoke in a pub or playing with one of the other singalong video games will be familiar with the concept. You choose the song, then sing along as the words come up on the screen, trying to keep in key and in time to score maximum points. The high score rankings at the end of each song add a real competitive element which just heightens the enjoyment, especially for the grown-ups.

If you have a wannabe popstar hogging the mic, it's still fun to watch because each song has a video clip - and the entertainment value of watching your tiny tot (or slightly sozzled relative !) singing enthusiastically along to the songs is sky-high ! Don't forget to get your camcorder out to record it for posterity !

Both games have a 3+ rating, although obviously, 5-year-old Juliette was at a definite disadvantage because she can't read yet so the lyrics don't help her at all. As I told her, give it a few weeks of practice and we'll all be word-perfect anyway !

The Disney Sing-It Family Hits game offers twenty songs from popular Disney movies (101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, Beauty & The Beast, Cars, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Lady & The Tramp, The Little Mermaid, Monsters Inc, Mary Poppins, The Princess & The Frog, Ratatouille, Toy Story and Peter Pan). There is a great mix of old classics and newer faves so that players of all generations can get involved.

The Disney Sing-It Party Hits' tracklist is brilliant for teens and tweens, featuring 30 songs from the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Camp Rock 2, Jonas Brothers, Kelly Clarkson and the afore-mentioned Justin Bieber. This game provided the soundtrack for our New Year's Eve party and we almost missed the fireworks on the telly because everyone was having so much fun !

We jumped right in and had fun singing along but there are various options available when the initial novelty value starts wearing off. In karaoke mode, you can turn off the original soundtrack so you can hear yourself singing louder (which may or may not be a good thing, depending on who's singing !). You can review your performance at the end and watch the video clip with your vocals added, which is often hilarious, even more so if you choose to play around with the special effects that alter your voice ! You can take things more seriously by using the personal vocal coach on the game (in which case, you should certainly check out my earlier blogpost full of singing tips from Yvie Burnett) or you can make it into a family affair with the party mode, going head-to-head, doing a duet or passing around the mic if you only have one to share.

9-year-old Sophie has already asked if she can invite her friends over for a Sing It party, which I suppose makes a change from a sleepover ! When you think how much fun little girls (including me !) used to have singing into their hairbrushes, it's easy to see why they get so enthusiastic. I love the fact that it really helps build their confidence and overcome shyness, as well as offering a great family game that everyone enjoys with no complicated rules to learn. I'd have liked a few older classics so that older family members could get involved more but it's still a great way to spend some quality time together as a family.
