MAM self-sterilising anti-colic bottle

Every time I see an advert for a new baby's bottle that's been produced, I wonder what on earth the manufacturers can possibly come up with that hasn't been done before. They've come so far since the early days, using technology to prevent colic, imitate a mother's breast and avoid nasty toxins in the plastic used.

Well, the new feeding bottle from Mam does all of that but has a non-negligeable ace up its sleeve, which I'll tell you about in a moment. (I'm saving the best till last !) The bottle has a base ventilation system which makes the milk flow smoothly without forming bubbles or foam that make baby swallow air and therefore helps prevent 80% of colic (although I have no idea how you measure a percentage of colic !). The so-called Silk Teat is made of the softest silicon possible and it has a slightly flattened form which imitates the shape of a mother's nipple, which is great for breast-fed babies. But most of that is actually pretty standard these days.

The really innovative thing about this bottle though is that it's self-sterilising. You unscrew the bottom, put in some water (20ml that you can measure out with the nifty measuring cup in the cap), put the teat and ring on the base, place the bottle components back on top of the base (without screwing them on), place the cap on the top and zap it in the microwave for a few minutes. No need for any bulky sterilising equipment, which is great if you have a small kitchen or are out and about visiting friends or relatives and don't want to transport large items.

I used to use a microwave steam steriliser when the kids were babies and remember that it was always a pain having to wait for it to be full up because it took up lots of place on the kitchen worktop. I also didn't like leaving unsterilised bottles hanging around for ages until I had enough to sterilise a complete load. With these bottles, you can sterilise as you go, doing one at a time if you want, so you don't even need to invest in so many bottles to begin with.

It's really quick too. Sterilising one bottle takes 3 minutes (depending on your microwave) but you can sterilise 6 bottles in just 8 minutes, which is absolutely amazing news for overstretched mums. Anything that can save you even a few minutes is an absolute godsend in the early days.

The bottle also looks very funky and feels nice to hold, with a wide base that adds great stabilty and a narrower neck that makes it easier for little hands to hold.

I have one final piece of good news for you - the lovely people at Mam have offered 50 - yes FIFTY ! - of these bottles to give away to readers of my blog. Watch this space for the fantastic giveaway coming very soon!

  4. Love these bottles been using them for the last 7 months only downfall is when you put them in a jug of hot water to warm the bottle up you have to shake bottle loads to get excess hot water off that collects on the bottom.
