When I saw the cinema posters for Room starring Brie Larson, I knew I wanted to see the film because I remember how deeply moving and haunting I found the book that it is based on, by Emma Donoghue. You can read my review of the book here and I was stunned to see that I read it all the way back in 2011. The fact that I can still remember the plot five years later just goes to prove how powerful and emotional the story is. I was worried that the film wouldn't live up to the book though, so I never ended up going to see it. I was delighted to receive a review copy of the DVD, and even more delighted to discover that it is just as good as the novel. Emma Donoghue worked on the screenplay which is probably why it retains all the poignancy and impact of the novel.

Brie Larson is absolutely perfect in the role of Ma, a devoted mother bringing up her 5-year-old son Jack in a world of warmth, love and normality. They play games, they tell stories, they watch TV together. The only difference is that they are captives in a 10-by-10-foot room. Jack has never known anything outside of his four walls but as he gets older, he starts to get more curious about his situation. They make a break for freedom but wil the outside world be a paradise regained or just a big scary place that they have no understanding of?

It sounds like it should be a very bleak and depressing film but, while it is undoubtedly a tearjerker, it is ultimately an incredibly life-affirming and uplifiting film about the resilience of humans and the protective love of a mother.
