When I saw the DVD cover for A Dozen Summers, I wondered what on earth I was holding in my hands ! It's actually a really lovely feel-good movie for the whole family though - it will strike a chord with anyone who has ever been been twelve, whether a few months, years or decades ago, because it deals with the universal highs and lows of being a tween or teenager and coming of age.
It's a family movie in two ways, firstly because it will appeal to a family audience, but secondly because the twin sisters in the movie, Maisie and Daisy McCormack, are played by real-life twins Hero and Scarlett Hall, who are the daughters of Kenton Hall, who wrote and directed the film as well as playing their father on screen. This probably explains why there is such great chemistry between them and why their interaction is so realistic and believable.
The film centres on Maisie and Daisy McCormack, twin sisters who have just hijacked a children’s film in order to tell their own story. In the process they address issues faced by all twelve year olds, such as family, friends, bullying and school life. With a typical 12-year-old's zest for life, imagination and refusal to be penned in by the rules of convention, they take us on a funny, heartwarming and nostalgic romp through their daily life. It's not just a kid-flick though, with the adults' lives hinted at along the way.
It's a lovely memorable film that shows that low budget indie films can be just as enjoyable as Hollywood blockbusters.
