blinc eye make up - "where innovation meets beauty"

When I read their company overview on their website, I couldn't help thinking that blinc were setting themselves up for a fall because they make some pretty impressive claims. They proudly explain : "Continuously ranked on the Inc. 5000 list as one of America's fastest growing private companies, blinc's mission is to introduce safe and exceptional beauty products that redefine how they should be made, applied and perform. blinc products are unique because their concepts offer a dramatic leap from solutions that existed before, placing them among the best in the world in their respective categories. Even though some of the product claims are extraordinary, blinc prides itself on the fact that they deliver what they promise." Well, the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say, so time to find out if they can live up to the hype !

Blinc UK kindly sent me three products to review, the first of which is their Lash Primer. This was a new concept for me so I was keen to see how it worked.

In their description of the Lash Primer, blinc say : "blinc lash primer was developed with two objectives in mind, lash/eyebrow treatment and eyelash enhancement. Whether your lashes are tiny and require a larger base to work with, in need of conditioning or you are simply looking for incredible volume & length, blinc lash primer delivers. Developed by blinc to complement blinc mascara, it provides a greater base of volume & length for your lashes, prior to applying your mascara." This makes really good sense because most of the time, to get the volume and length that I want, I apply two or sometimes even three coats of mascara. The result is frequently less than satisfactory because the mascara inevitably forms clumps or lashes stick together. This primer goes on really easily, just like mascara, and within seconds, you do have a much more impressive base to work on so just one coat of mascara is enough. That means you get a more natural and clean but still impressive result.

I also love the fact that the lash primer doesn't just make your lashes look better; it actually does them good because it contains vitamin E to nourish them. You can use it before applying mascara for a more impressive look, or just put some on your lashes (or eyebrows) before bed, like a hair mask for lashes ! It makes perfect sense so I'll definitely keep on using this.
Next up was the mascara. Now I said this the last time I reviewed a new mascara but I've got to the point where I think that anything that can possibly be done to mascara must have been done by now, surely ! Well, no. blinc have come up with a mascara that doesn't paint your lashes like normal mascara, it covers them in tiny tubes ! It sounds weird but it works really well, because this is the first mascara that genuinely is totally waterproof. At one point, I actually forgot I was wearing it and rubbed my eyes, then said to Sophie, "Oops, look under my eyes, is it all black ?". With the cutting honesty of a 9-year-old, she chirpily said "no, no black, just wrinkles" !! Thanks for that !

Unlike some mascaras, particularly the waterproof ones, it's actually really easy to remove at the end of the day. You don't even have to use makeup remover, just lots of warm water on cotton wool, or your fingers, and you won't pull half of your eye lashes out either ! You can even see the tiny tubes on the cotton wool ! I tried the mascara in black but it comes in eight shades, including a very funky purple or green.

Once again, I have to admit, they really have come up with a totally new and different concept, which is amazing enough in itself, with the number of new make-up launches each month. But not only that - it actually works. Really really well.
The final product to review in my eye make-up trio was eyeliner. Now I have never tried liquid eyeliner because I always thought it looked really complicated to put on and worried it would smudge everywhere. I did give this a go though and have to admit it wasn't as hard as I expected. blinc give you some handy advice, if you're a total novice - "Gently pull the upper eye lid towards your ear and start at the inner part of the lid. Draw a thin line evenly along the upper lid as close to the lashes as possible." The great news is, if you do go a bit wobbly, a little water and some light pressure on a cotton bud are all you need to rectify the problem.

As with the blinc mascara, you don't need make-up remover at the end of the day, just warm water and your fingers, some cotton wool or a facecloth. If you do opt for a makeup remover, make sure it's water-based and not oil-based or it won't work. Nevertheless, the eyeliner is waterproof and won't budge throughout the day, even if you cry or rub it.

I do have one tiny gripe - the packaging. Each product comes in a stylish metal tube which looks very funky, but I can't help thinking it's excess packaging and is not good for the environment. Secondly, each product looks identical so if you have several blinc products, it's not easy to find the one you want without scrutinising each tube to read the label. As a busy working mum, every second counts in the morning so this is a frustrating waste of time.

But you can't judge a book by its cover and I have to say that I'm very impressed with the products themselves, both for the innovative design (I almost said creative genius but thought that sounded a bit too gushy !) and also for how well they work.

I thought I was going to be able to say that pride comes before a fall and that they didn't live up to the hype, but I can't. They really are as good as they claim !

Byron Bay Bakehouse Butterbursts

Beyond the Bean - a company who sell everything you need to run a coffee shop except for coffee and coffee machines - recently sent me a lovely goodie box of products to try out, including the Sweetbird fruit smoothies that I reviewed here. Next up was a selection of Byron Bay Bakehouse Butterburst cookies - try saying that three times fast, especially with a mouthful of cookie !

I instantly loved the fact that these cookies look almost home-made. They're generously sized and seem really fresh. We tried out three flavours - Choc-Hazelnut, Citrus Lemon and Passionfruit.

The girls instantly went for the Choc-Hazelnut ones, which they declared delicious, then said they tasted like the chocolate biscuits I made. *Proud Mummy moment !* I had a taste too and really liked them, although I was expecting them to be more chocolatey. The dominant flavour is hazelnut more than chocolate. Because of the word butterburst, I was expecting quite a heavy, almost greasy, buttery biscuit but they are actually very light and crisp.

We also tried the fruity cookies - Citrus Lemon and Passionfruit - both at the same time because once they are out of the packets, there is no way (except by smell or taste) of telling them apart ! They seem lighter than the choc-hazelnut ones, with a much more delicate flavour. I would actually have liked them (especially the lemon one) to have a stronger, more intense flavour because the taste is lovely but, especially if you're eating them alongside a drink, doesn't pack much of a punch. The Citrus Lemon cookie is delicately zesty and refreshing with a natural flavour. I was intrigued to try the passionfruit one because it's a flavour I have never tried and would never have thought of in a cookie, and it's very pleasant, despite me not being keen on fresh passionfruit. It's a sweet and almost floral flavour and I love the fact that it's so unusual and different that it seems very refined. A great one to bring out to impress the in laws !

We tried the individually wrapped cookie portions, each one containing two cookies, which was great for the girls to eat on the way home from school or, as they are designed, for you to snatch at the counter as you rush out of a coffee shop on the way back to work. It's also a great way to make sure you only eat a reasonable quantity if you're watching your weight and don't want to polish off a whole box of supermarket-bought biscuits !

I also received one Banoffee cookie which was bigger than all the others and that I secreted away in the cupboard to eat all by myself (just to avoid squabbling, you understand !). Wow ! It was totally delicious, indulgent and buttery. Definitely my favourite of the whole bunch and one that I will be looking out for again !

Post-it Super Sticky Label Pads

Post-it notes are one of those simple little things that I wonder how we ever lived without. I use them for a variety of reasons, both at home and at work, including :

- recycling box folders, when they need a new label because they're now being used to file something completely different

- sticking important messages in the middle of the bathroom mirror or the computer monitor so that I'm 100% certain that Madhouse Daddy Mike will spot it first thing !

- adding little notes to recipes in cookery books that need tweaking but before I've got the final improvements finalised

-adding monthly reminders to the calendar so they can be moved over to the next month without rewriting it all

- jotting down shopping lists that I stick to my purse so I can't forget what I need when I rush out of the door

- sticking an important but one-off phone number (for example, for phoning a pupil's parent or parcel delivery man) to the back of my mobile phone when I haven't had time to phone

- for sticking on the inside of kitchen cupboards to remind me what's in there that needs using up (especially useful for spices and sachets of dried fruit)

- putting the date on Tupperware boxes of leftovers in the fridge so I can remember how long they've been in there

If you have any other brilliant uses I haven't thought of, let me know !

So what's so special about these new Super Sticky Post-it notes that I was sent to review, I hear you ask ? 3M explain : "The back of each label is fully coated with the Post-it brand Super Sticky repositionable adhesive. This means that the labels not only stick securely to just about anything, but they can also be easily removed without leaving a mark. So, when there is another sort-out and everything is labeled again, the old labels can be cleanly removed and folders, boxes or files will look as good as new. A neat, perforated tab at the side of each Label Pad also makes them super quick and easy to use. Simply write on the label, use the tab to peel it from the pad and stick it firmly in place, whilst tearing off the perforated tab completely."

They really do live up to their promises. They stick really well, even when used on a vertical surface, but are easy to remove and reposition, without leaving marks or ripping paper or cardboard surfaces. And they also come in a lovely selection of sizes and colours (yellow, white, pink, green, orange, blue) which make colour-coding and organising a doddle, as well as looking very pretty !

Play That Tune : Musical Playmat Game

When I was offered the game "Play That Tune" to review, the name reminded me of a game I had as a kid in the eighties called Name That Tune (which, I seem to remember, was a TV gameshow too). That game was like a kind of musical version of Simon, the grandaddy of electronic games ! Remember that ?!

Well, when Play That Tune arrived, the kids, not to mention me, were all excited to see that it contains a big piano mat. Remember the scene in the Tom Hanks film Big when he plays Chopsticks by jumping around on a big keyboard on the floor ? Admittedly this one isn't quite so big but it's still great fun.

The box also contains a pack of game cards with the tunes that you need to guess. I wasn't sure how we'd manage to play with young kids who wouldn't recognise or know any of the songs, but it's well thought out. The card gives you the name of the song and a series of numbers that represent the notes that need to be played. No musical skill or song knowledge required - anybody can play the tunes just by following the numbers. They've also thought about the different ages/generations of the players and have incorporated quite a large number of songs that even the youngest kids will recognise, such as nursery rhymes and happy birthday.

But to be honest, you don't really need to bother with the timer and points and scoring (unless you really want to or if you're playing amongst adults and older kids) because what the kids will love is jumping about on the mat to make music.

20-month-old Pierre also had fun crawling on it and sliding about on his bum ! Now that's what I call a musical genius ! And certainly great fun for everyone.

Plum Breadsticks

We've reviewed a variety of toddler snacks here at The Madhouse over the past few months, but this time, it was these Spelt Breadsticks from Plum on the testing hotseat. They are available in Tomato & Herb and Mild Pecorino Cheese flavours and we received a box of each to test.

Plum describe them as "authentic hand rolled spelt breadsticks made using the traditional Tuscan method passed from generation to generation and made with extra virgin olive oil" and even go on to say : "These breadsticks taste better than adult versions! "

Designed for babies aged from 12 months onwards, 20-month-Pierre was the first to give them a try.

First of all he looked a bit dubious and played with them, banging them on the highchair tray and rolling them around !

But once he got the idea of putting one in his mouth, he made a little "hmmmm" noise and munched his way through several of them !

They may be designed for babies (and they are really good for teething toddlers who want something to work their gums on) but that didn't stop big sisters Sophie, 9, and Juliette, 6, wanting a taste too. They loved them just as much as Pierre, which is hardly surprising when you look at the ingredients. Plum say : "Subtly tangy and fresh, the Tomato & Herb breadsticks are made with the finest tomatoes and complemented with the perfect combination of rosemary and oregano herbs, while the Mild Pecorino cheese breadsticks are made with the classic Italian Pecorino Romano cheese from Sardinia."

Each box contains three sealed sachets of breadsticks so they're great for popping in your handbag for fighting off toddler tantrums when out and about and they're surprisingly resilient, unlike some other snacks which end up smashed into a pile of crumbs in your bag. There are also plenty of breadsticks to go round, even with three peckish kids sharing them !

They're healthy, tasty, convenient and not messy - what more could you want from a toddler snack ?!

Rude Health Thins

*** Click here to enter my giveaway to win ten boxes of Rude Health Thins ! ***

Hands up if you made a New Year's Resolution this year to eat healthily and/or lose weight ! And hands up if the diet-friendly food is starting to get boring now ! Well, Rude Health to the rescue. They've recently unveiled a range of  healthy snacks called Thins that are big on taste but low in fat and calories. I've tried (and reviewed) their muesli in the past and was really impressed, both by the taste and the ingredients, so I was really pleased when I was sent some of the Thins to try. On their website, Rude Health declare they are "a full-on flavour sensation", which aren't usually the words that spring to mind when you hear the words healthy snacks, but with Rude Health, anything is possible !

The Thins come in three varieties, the first one of which we tried was Multigrain Thins. Rude Health explain : "Multigrain Thins are packed with the natural flavours of corn, buckwheat, quinoa, millet and rice, with a splash of Sicilian sea salt. They're gluten-free, low in fat and high in fibre. For a delightfully light lunch spread our Multigrain Flakes with hummous or avocado dip." They remind me a bit of a cross between Ryvita and Ritz crackers and they go with just about anything. My favourite topping (so far) is salmon pâté and cucumber but the girls loved them spread with Nutella and peanut butter (both on the same one - did someone say low calorie ?!)

Next up were the Oaty Thins. Rude Health say : "Made with the finest organic oats and spelt, these thins have an irresistibly complex flavour. They are also low in fat, high in fibre, and have no added salt. Try Oaty Thins with smoked salmon and a squeeze of lemon for a sophisticated nibble." Well, that sounded a bit too much like the way I'd eaten the Multigrain ones, so I went for a nice slice of mature cheddar on top instead. They're even nicer with a slice of tomato on top so that they're not too dry. Lovely as a snack in front of the telly.

The final box was the Rice Thins, which I wasn't sure I'd like, but Rude Health declare that they have nothing to do with "those miserable, polyfiller rice cakes" made by the opposition ! Some people have told me that rice cakes are nice spread with Nutella or jam (this is starting to sound like a sponsored post for Nutella - it isn't, I promise !!) but doesn't that defeat the whole healthy eating object ?! Well, Rude Health proudly say that "when it comes to the Rice Thins, we use such tasty brown rice that you don't need to add anything else at all. We love trying to get whole ones into our mouths unbroken! Low in fat and gluten-free, Rice Thins are the perfect crunchy bite to be enjoyed without the least pang of guilt." I have to say, they do have more taste than the other rice cakes I've tried in the past. The girls love them and say they taste of popcorn so they're great for lunchboxes or healthy after-school snacks.

Each slice only contains 25 calories and they're really versatile so whatever you're craving, sweet or savoury, you can munch a few Thins with a clear conscience.

I've saved the best news till last though - Rude Health have kindly donated ten packs of their new Thins to give away to followers of my blog. Watch this space ! (Now live. Click here !)

Could your baby be the face of the Disney Store? In conjunction with Mumsnet, Disney Store is launching the Wonderful Moments Competition, a nationwide search to find the UK’s most wonderful baby moment. Disney Store is looking for a baby who captures the wonder of the first 12 months of life to be part of a future campaign. The winning baby will receive a featuring role in a Disney Store film shoot and a professional photography session, the results of which will feature in a national Disney Store campaign, plus a hamper full of Disney Store baby goodies.

The first year of a baby’s life is full of wonderful moments to be cherished – their first smile, their first tooth, their first crawl, their first Christmas. To enter the competition, parents simply have to choose a photo that captures a wonderful moment and submit it at any of the 56 Disney Stores in the UK or via the leading parenting website, Mumsnet. The competition is open from 19th March until 9th April 2011. A shortlist of 10 of the most wonderful moments will then be put to the public vote with the overall winner being announced in May 2011.
