Colman's Season & Steam Bacon & Herb Potatoes review

There are loads of ways of cooking potatoes - baking them, boiling them, making them into chips or wedges, frying them, mashing them - but I have to admit, I don't often steam them. I was therefore keen to see what we'd make of Colman's Season & Steam Bacon & Herb Potatoes. The packaging promises a meal accompaniment that is "flavourful and quick" which sounds perfect for busy mums.

The pack tells you to use about 500g of potatoes. I weighed them to give you an idea of what that corresponds to - more or less four medium potatoes. Following the instructions, I peeled them and chopped them into 2cm cubes (although I would be tempted to try this without peeling them too).

As well as the contents of the pack, you also need to add 75ml of water.

Use the tie to seal the bag - make sure the red vent stays open - and stand it up on a plate.

You need to zap them in the microwave on full power for 9 and a half minutes, which sounded like a lot to me. That doesn't really make it any quicker than boiling them or frying them.

The potato chunks come out perfectly cooked - tender but not dissolving to mush - and are infused with a meaty bacon flavour. It was actually a bit strange to have the bacon flavour without really seeing any bacon present, so it would have been nice to have more visible specks of bacon in there so that your brain can equate the flavour with the visual aspect !

I served the potatoes with steak and saag aloo (as I was pretty sure the kids wouldn't go for the spinach !) and the flavours complemented each other nicely.

The seasoning mix contains Potato Starch, Maltodextrin, Salt, Vegetable Fat, Sugar, Smoked Bacon (8,2%) (Pork, Salt, Smoked Flavouring, Preservative (Sodium Nitrite), Antioxidant (Sodium Erythorbate) , Rice Flour, Onion Powder, Yeast Extract, Herbs (1.6%) (Parsley, Rosemary), Spices (Garlic, Pepper, Paprika), Smoke Flavouring, Powdered Lemon Juice. It is enough for four servings and each serving contains 110 calories, 1.5g of sugar, 1g of fat (of which 0.5g saturates) and 0.81g of salt.

star rating : 4/5
