I-Spy ... the classic boredom buster ! (review)

This week saw Collins relaunching the iconic i-SPY series of children's books that I remember fondly from my own childhood - back in the days before we relied on ipads, mobile phones and portable DVD players for keeping the kids amused during the school holidays or on long car and plane journeys.

The books cover everything under the sun but some are particularly relevant for the holidays, such as 'On a car journey', 'At the airport' and 'On a car journey in France'. There are also a lovely selection of nature and outdoorsy ones such as 'Creepy crawlies', 'Birds' and 'In the countryside' which are a great way of getting the kids interested in their surroundings and out into the fresh air.

I was having a discussion with some of the mums at the school gate today and they were complaining about the fact that there is (I quote) absolutely nothing to do in the town with the kids that doesn't cost a fortune. I totally disagree - we're always finding free events to go along to or getting out and about geocaching and going out on nature walks is another favourite, and free, pastime of ours. Taking along an I-Spy book or two makes it much more fun because there's nothing kids love more than an element of competition, trying to be the first one to spot things or ticking the most things off, and it also makes it more educational and interesting, because even as an adult, I learn lots of little facts about the local floral and fauna that I didn't know.

You even get the chance to send off for a certificate and a 'Super i-SPY Spotter' badge at the end of the book !

I spy the perfect way to keep the kids entertained and away from their screens during the holidays !
