New York Deli Style Heinz Yellow Mustard

Until a couple of years ago, I was convinced I hated mustard. I can deal with spicy food with a chilli kick that sets your mouth and throat on fire but there's something about the fieriness of mustard that attacks your nose that I just don't like ! Then I discovered American-import mustard and had the sudden realisation that generations of Americans hadn't been completely nuts to slather their hotdogs in mustard as I'd always thought - they have a much more mellow version of mustard than the British one that tastes a bit like piccalilli and gives sandwiches a lovely and totally not-hot lift. Well, now us Brits can get ours hands on a New York Deli Style mustard without forking out on extortionate US import prices because Heinz have launched a range of yellow mustards.

Available in two flavours – Mild and Honey Mustard – Heinz Yellow Mustard comes in a family-friendly squeezable bottle to make it even easier to slather on sausages, burgers and sandwiches. Keeping on the American theme, I used it in bagels in place of the usual mayonnaise, alongside polony and tomato slices, which was lovely. (Incidentally, did you know that polony is also called Bologna sausage in America or ... baloney ? And I promise you that's not a load of baloney, it's the truth !) I even squirted a bit of mustard on the top of the bagel to create a football design with black onion seeds (in honour of the Euro 2016 final) but sadly it wasn't a great success and looked more like the bagel had been infested by a swarm of ants ! It tasted fab though ! I made homemade burgers too which I served in burger buns with ketchup on the bottom and mustard on the top. Pierre and Juliette said they tasted just like "real" hamburgers from McDonald's (which was meant as a compliment, honest !).

The Honey Yellow Mustard is also lovely for adding sweetness to marinades and salad dressings, or for smearing over a whole chicken or a piece of pork for the Sunday roast. Both of the mustards are extremely mild so if you think you don't like mustard, it's definitely worth giving them a go. All together now ... they call her mellow yellow !

Heinz Yellow Mustard is available in Sainsbury’s, Morrison’s, Waitrose and Ocado, with RRPs from £1.69.
