Kids iPad app review : Open Wide Snap

A couple of months ago, I reviewed (here) a lovely app called Hide, Run, Growl which is an interactive storybook app that is great for helping beginner readers to learn new words and build up the confidence they need to read aloud. If your kids haven't started reading yet, they can still use the "read to me" function to follow the story and look at the way simple words are spelt by clicking around on the screen.

Well, we've just been sent the new kids' book app to discover. Called Open Wide Snap, the format is exactly the same as the earlier app we reviewed - you get a cute, illustrated animal story that you can read by yourself, clicking on any tricky words that you get stuck on, or listening to a narrator reading the whole thing in "read to me" mode. You can click on various parts of the pictures to hear and see key words come up, which is great for helping little learner with their word recognition, and there are a couple of simple games included (jigsaw puzzle and pairs).

The Madhouse mini testers loved the cute animal story, featuring a crocodile with dirty teeth who can't find anyone willing to trust him enough to go anywhere near his open mouth. When the friendly bunny in the story finally agrees to help him, I wasn't sure if this would end up being a happy-ending with an "everybody deserves a chance to be trusted" moral or a warning "there's no trusting some people so trust your gut instincts" type of tale, but I was happy to see it will leave you with a warm, snuggly feeling inside !

  1. This is fantastic. I would so love to own an i-pad. I need to find a comp to win one, and then win it!
