We love cheese here at the Madhouse and cheddar is our all time favourite, so when we were offered the chance to try out a new brand of cheddar called MU, we didn't have to think twice. I glanced at the packs that we were sent and noticed that there was a Mature Cheddar and a Mature Lighter Cheddar with 30% less fat, then opened a pack and cut a slice off for everyone to try. We all murmured appreciatively at the creaminess and lovely flavour and I wondered to myself whether the lower fat version would be as nice - then I realised that I'd inadvertently started with the Lighter cheese ! That answers that one then !
As with all cheddar, MU is highly versatile and we tried it as it was, on crackers, in sandwiches, in cheese on toast and on the top of a pasta bake. Next week, it will be finished off grated as a topping for a homemade fish pie.
Speaking of which, where MU is quite innovative is that you can buy it in ready-grated packs and slices, as well as a slab. We always buy pre-grated cheese in France as it is such a fabulous time-saver in the kitchen, especially as you can freeze a bag and use it directly from frozen if it's going in the oven.
If you're muttering that you don't like mature cheddar, you'll be pleased to know that the full MU range includes MU Mild Cheddar, MU Medium Cheddar, MU Mature Cheddar, MU Lighter Mature Cheese, MU Mature Grated Cheddar andMU Mature Sliced Cheddar.
MU have a few other serving suggestions up their sleeves, if you're looking for inspiration. They suggest : "Why not get kids involved in the kitchen and make yummy cheese straws? Just roll out ready to roll pastry and fill with slices of MU Medium Cheddar then bake in the oven! Hungry families will love making colourful pizzas with vegetable faces topped with MU Mild Cheddar for a mouth watering midweek meal. You can even create mini jacket potatoes for little tummies using baked new potatoes – you’d be surprised how many kids like a stronger flavour, so try topping with a sprinkling of MU Mature Grated."
