New CBeebies pre-school TV series : Mike the Knight

Mike the Knight is the latest new kids' TV series to hit the screens on CBeebies. As soon as you read the list of other shows created by the same producers - Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam - you can tell that the cheerful little knight-in-training is going to steal the hearts of little boys (and girls) across the nation.

Mike is described as "an energetic, cheeky yet bountiful young knight-in-training, driven by his passion to help others and, along the way, be the best knight he can be". His dad the King is away exploring faraway lands so young Mike has been given the huge responsibility of helping his mum the Queen look after the Kingdom.

Luckily he has two friendly dragons, Sparkie and Squirt, as well as his trusty steed Galahad, to help him and a very handy book called The Big Book For Little Knights In Training. Mike's sister Evie, who is a wizard-in-training, also helps him out when she can (but sometime her spells don't go quite to plan !).

The medieval landscape, complete with Vikings, trolls, dragons and castles, is a great introduction to the Middle Ages for young learners and Mike's missions also stay true to the medieval theme. His challenges include horseriding, preparing feasts and festivals, guarding the castle, being a good citizen and even rescuing princesses.

It's a lovely programme to watch together because the kids will love the action and brightly coloured computer-generated animation and the parents will chuckle at Fernando the Bard's witty ditties at the beginning and end of each show.

Since its first showing on 31st October, it's been on CBeebies every weekday but don't worry if you haven't discovered it yet. There are 52 episodes in total, so there is still plenty of time for your little viewers to learn Mike's cry of "Be a knight, do it right" !
