The Madhouse Mini-testers were really excited last week to receive yet another fabulous surprise package from Warner Brothers, this time to celebrate the DVD release of Happy Feet 2. As well as containing both Happy Feet DVDs and March of the Penguins, it also had lots of little extras for them to share out, including this rather funky hat.
If you haven't yet seen the first Happy Feet film, you might like to read my review here to catch up.
Happy Feet 2 offers everything that the first film did - cute penguins, catchy tunes and a lovely, family-friendly story to make you go aaah. This time around, Mumbles - the star of the first film - is all grown up and has his own son, called Erik. Just as Mumbles caused a headache for his parents in the first film with his constant dancing and inability to sing, the troublesome Erik is not following in his father's footsteps because he hates dancing. He runs away and finds the Mighty Sven, a highly impressive flying penguin. But Mumbles has bigger fish to fry than his wayward son when he has to unite all the penguin nations, as well as all manner of other creatures, to overcome powerful forces that are threatening the whole world.
We often watch family-viewing DVDs on a Sunday afternoon but usually it's for the kids' pleasure rather than our own entertainment. This time around however, the grown-ups were as glued to the screen as the kids ! The film features the voices of Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Alecia Moore (P!nk), Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Sofia Vergara, Common, Hugo Weaving, Magda Szubanski, Anthony LaPaglia, Richard Carter and Benjamin “Lil P-Nut” Flores, Jr and it was great fun trying to recognise them all !
The double-DVD boxset containing the original Happy Feet movie and March of the Penguins also got a very warm reception. This Oscar-winning 80-minute documentary, narrated by Morgan Freeman, focuses on a real life colony of Emperor penguins as they make their way to their frozen breeding-grounds and it's a fabulous, informative film to watch in parallel with the Happy Feet movies because kids will realise that many aspects of the film are actually true to life. Once again, the adults loved this film as much as the kids.
Thanks Warner Brothers for some truly fab viewing !
