As soon as I saw this beautifully presented sachet of biscuits, my instant thought was that it was begging to be included in a homemade Christmas hamper of carefully selected goodies for a special loved one. The plastic sachet, with a cute label and festive red ribbon, keeps the biscuits inside beautifully fresh and also proudly declares that it won Gold in the 2011 Great Taste Awards.
You get two biscuits inside and they are beautifully crumbly, buttery and melt-in-the-mouth. They taste just like homemade cookies (although I never manage to get mine this soft and crumbly, if I'm honest !).
Taste-wise, they have a subtle, understated ginger flavour with no heat at all and you can taste the flavours of the other ingredients - honey, cinnamon and nutmeg - coming through. I said that they tasted homemade and, looking at the label, they are described as "handmade in Scarlett's kitchen at Monkridge Hall, Otterburn, Northumberland.
The ingredients list contains absolutely nothing that you wouldn't find in your own kitchen - wheat flour, butter (milk, salt), honey (19%), soft brown sugar, raising agent : bicarbonate of soda, ground ginger, mixed spice, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt. Nothing artificial and certainly not an E-number in sight.
At the bottom of the label, it says : "We love these with a cup of tea and a sit-down!". Here at The Madhouse, we just love them !
