Kelly’s of Cornwall Clotted Cream & Blackcurrant Ice Cream review

The first time I was given the opportunity to try out Kelly's of Cornwall Clotted Cream ice cream, I wasn't actually sure I would be a huge fan because it sounded a bit sickly and overly rich. I was also worried that it wouldn't live up to my childhood memories of eating delicious Cornish ice cream on our summer holidays in Perranporth. Then we reviewed a tub (here) and were totally won over by its gorgeous creaminess and smooth flavour. It's now a regular visitor to our freezer and it even has a nickname in our family - "the ice cream with the boobs in it" because, when you open the tub for the first time, the swirls of ice cream often leave an imprint of what looks like boobs on the lid ! (If you think I'm warped, have a look at this photo - and comments ! - on the Foodstuff Finds blog here ! I'm not the only one !)

Kelly's introduced a chocolate variant back at Easter (which we reviewed here) and have just asked us to try out their Clotted Cream & Blackcurrant Ice Cream. I was again slightly worried that the tartness of the blackcurrants would mar the indulgent creaminess of the ice cream but I should have learnt my lesson last time - Kelly's know what they're doing when it comes to ice cream. The sharpness of the fruit is mellowed down by the ice cream so that even the kids, who usually find blackcurrants too tart (unless they're baked in a pie or jam with loads of sugar added), thought that the flavour of the ice cream was lovely. Creamy sweet ice cream is the predominant flavour with blackcurrant as a definitely present but not overpowering undertone.

Although this is obviously a sweet treat rather than a healthy snack, you might like to know that blackcurrants are rich in vitamins and minerals, containing twice the potassium of bananas, four times the vitamin C of oranges, and twice the antioxidants of blueberries. That doesn't mean that you can have two scoops and justify it by saying that it's part of your five a day though !

It is more expensive than many other ice cream brands but you do get what you pay for. Made in Bodmin with true dairy ingredients including lashings of Cornish clotted cream and Cornish whole milk, Kelly's is the only genuine Cornish ice cream that is made in Cornwall and available nationally. And it really does remind me of the Cornish ice cream I ate as a kid.

They have also just released a Clotted Cream & Brandy Butter ice cream which sounds absolutely perfect for accompanying the Christmas pudding in a couple of months.
