Heinz Beanz and Pulses review

It’s over 100 years since Heinz Baked Beans were first launched and generations of kids have been brought up on fishfingers, chips and beans or sausages, mash and beans. Mums who are stressing about getting their kids to stop turning their noses up at fruit and vegetables are always delighted to learn that baked beans count as one of your 5-a-day portions and Heinz have now brought out a range of innovative beans and pulses that count not as one but two of your veg portions in each half can. There are three flavours to choose from and we got to try them all.

Tuscan Beanz are bursting with cannellini beans in a roasted garlic, basil and chunky tomato sauce. Heinz suggest pouring them over chicken, stirring into pasta dishes or serving as a saucy side for pork chops.

Fajita Beanz are a mix of pinto beans in a chilli and coriander sauce with a hint of lime, the perfect filling for chicken fajitas, or to serve alongside chicken or pork with rice.

Veg Chilli Beanz are packed full of red kidney beans in tomato salsa and smoked chilli sauce, great for adding to a chilli con carne, as a dip for nachos or as a topping for tasty tacos.

They are an absolutely fabulous way of injecting some pizazz into quick midweek meals when you're in a rush or for perking up the leftovers. The Veg Chilli Beanz have a subtle kick that is great for accompanying a baked potato or with rice and you can mix in leftover cooked meat, vegetables and potatoes from the Sunday roast for an instant meal makeover. They're great as storecupboard staples because they are so versatile.

They are also ideal for introducing the kids to some more exotic and adventurous flavours in an appealing way because they'll recognise the beans. You could go for something simple like grown-up beans on toast, maybe adding extra ingredients like smoked sausage or chorizo, or use them to add even more great flavour to casseroles, soups and other winter warmers. The Tuscan Beanz produced the best sausage casserole I've ever tasted and the Fajita Beanz added a lovely richness to my chilli con carne.

Each variety is naturally high in fibre and low in sugar and fat with no artificial colour, flavour or preservatives. Another great ally if you're trying to eat healthily as your New Year's resolution.

  4. These look great, but never tried them yet, but will soon i'm sure. Thoroughly recommended is Heinz Five Beanz - this has become a massive favourite of mine - has RedKidney, Haricot, Pinto, Borlotti & Cannellini beans in tomato sauce. A great mix. I recommend this massively and people should also give this a try.
