Lovetub puddings review

You might have noticed (or even entered) my giveaway last week to win a fabulous Valentine's Day hamper from the lovely people at LoveTub. Well they kindly sent me through a boxload of their deliciously naughty chocolate, caramel and sticky toffee puddings to review too. Now, you all know I'm trialling the Jenny Craig plan at the moment (see my review here) but I had to make an exception (or three) to taste them, just for the purposes of writing an honest review, obviously !

The puddings come in two sizes, 100g individual pots that are just the right size for a quick indulgent treat for one and that only take about half a minute in the microwave, or bigger 300g pots to share, probably designed for two but which manage to provide instant delicious dessert for the three Madhouse Mini Testers with enough left over for me to taste ! If you go for the chocolate pudding, the small pots have cute tiny chocolate hearts on top and the bigger pots have equally delicious but slightly less visually pleasing chocolate chunks. To be honest, it makes no difference at all because they melt when you heat them up but the kids always want the heart shaped ones !

The chocolate pudding makes a deliciously gooey, moist, chocolate-infused sponge but I have a particular weakness for the caramel pudding. Just looking at the lashings of sticky gooeyness just waiting to be warmed up is enough to make me salivate - I'll be licking the screen in a minute !

Now, I actually overheated it, zapping it in the microwave for a minute which was twice as long as it should have been, because I was in too much of a rush to get it in my gob to actually sit down and read the instructions ! (Madhouse Daddy Mike was no better - he ate the first chocolate pudding cold because he didn't read the label but he still thought it was very nice !) The caramel went totally molten which was delicious because it oozed all over the sponge and coated the spoon ... but it was way too hot to eat for ages which was absolute torture !

The girls get really excited every time they're allowed one, because they think it's a really grown-up treat and also because it's so quick and easy to prepare.

The puddings themselves are quite light but they go quite dense and soggy once you've totally smothered them in sauce.

My one criticism is that I've looked all over the packaging and couldn't find any nutritional information anywhere. Not to be put off, I kept on looking online and have discovered that one 100g chocolate pudding contains ... eeek ! ... 438 calories, 27g of fat (of which 16.7g saturated) and 31.1g of sugar. The caramel pudding contains a slightly better 372 calories and 17.8g of fat (of which 10.9g saturates) per 100g but it does have - ahem - 40g of sugar in it. I can't say I'm surprised but I really wish they would make this nutritional information more readily available on the packaging, as the total absence of calorie labelling would put me off buying them if I saw them in the shop.

That's my only negative point though - they are absolutely delicious and so convenient. They are the ideal winter version of snuggling up on the sofa sharing a tub of Haagen Dazs or Ben & Jerry's (which probably has just as many calories !)

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : £1.29 for a 100g pot, £2.99 for a 300g pot (but look out for special offers at the moment)

  1. Convenient and tempting. Wouldn't last long in my house.

  2. I tried my first one last week, and I also noticed the lack of nutritional information on the packaging! I guess it's better for the indulgence I suppose ... I thought the caramel one was way too sweet, but the chocolate one was just right. I should also note that I didn't realise it had to be microwaved, so my hubby and I dug right in and at it cold! Not bad though.
