Warner Brothers family viewing #4 : Dolphin Tale review

When the lovely people at Warner Brothers offered to send us a DVD of Dolphin Tale for us to watch during half term, I jumped at the chance - any films involving animals always get a warm reception here at The Madhouse but dolphins are the girls' favourite animals so this was bound to be a winner. I wasn't prepared for a totally enchanting, touching film that would have the whole family including the adults transfixed, but that was what we got !

Dolphin Tale recounts the story of Winter the dolphin who gets caught in a crab trap and is found on the beach by young loner Sawyer. A dedicated team of marine biologists at the Clear Water Marine Hospital manage to save her life but not her tail - this is obviously extremely problematic and indeed life-threatening for a dolphin until they manage to come up with a ground-breaking prosthetic tail. All sounding a bit far-fetched ? Well, it shouldn't, because the most amazing thing is that this is all based on a true story.

Winter becomes a real symbol of hope and perseverance and the film champions the values of friendship, dedication, faith and never giving up despite the odds. The fact that Winter plays herself in the film adds an extra note of poignancy and I bet many viewers will have a lump in their throat or shed a few tears before the end of the film.
It also touches on the plight of wounded servicemen and the scientific and medical breakthroughs will add an extra level of interest for the grown-ups. It's a fabulous feel-good family movie, at first tragic but ultimately heart-warming and incredibly positive. Definitely one for the whole family to watch together.

If your kids have been really inspired by the tale of Winter, they will love the opportunity of watching her on live webcam on the Dolphin Tale website here. We managed to catch a glimpse of her and the Madhouse mini-testers got incredibly excited !

Dolphin Tale will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on February 13th and is available for pre-order now. Sounds like the perfect romantic Valentine's Day gift to me !
