Alpro Soya Dairy Free Custard review

We've already reviewed a number of Alpro Soya dairy-free products here at The Madhouse, including the Alpro soya Plus Cholesterol-Lowering milk alternative (here) and their desserts (here), and we've been pleasantly surprised to discover that even for those who don't need a diary-free diet, they can be very tasty. We also received a carton of their Dairy-Free Custard to try but, I have to admit, it's been sitting in the cupboard for quite some time waiting for an opportunity to use it.

Well, the other day I knocked up a rhubarb and apple crumble and decided to serve it with the chilled custard, straight from the fridge. If you're frowing at the screen and thinking "cold custard ? Has the woman gone mad ?!", rest assured it can also be served hot !

The Alpro Soya custard alternative is really creamy and sweet with a lovely vanilla flavour. The taste went down well with all of the family, kids and adults alike. The kids actually finished off the rest of the carton by itself for dessert the next day !

And as a mum, I love the fact that it's also actually a healthy option. Made with blend of water and soya beans, it contains calcium and vitamins but only 81 calories per 100g. It is cholesterol-free and low in fat, with only 1.7g of fat of which only 0.4g is saturated.

As it is long life, you don't even need to keep it in the fridge (although it tastes great when it's really cold so make sure you chill it before serving) so it's a great standby for a quick dessert.

  4. I'm vegan and can't stand meat or owt .. the taste etc repulses me.. I just heated this custard up and it has the oddest taste like how meat smells if that makes sense.. I've had to leave it cos it tastes really weird! Do you think I had a dodgy carton or maybe I've done setting wrong?
