I recently posted about the Slow Toys movement (here) - and even posted my top ten Slow Toys nominations here - and I have to say it's great to see people getting back to basics, promoting old-fashioned toys that need imagination, not batteries, to bring them to life. Well, these Tumblekins toys from Great Gizmos perfectly adhere to the Slow Toys principles.
We received the Tumblekins Police Car to review. We actually got off to a bad start. I absolutely hate the packaging. It's made of that tough moulded plastic that is really hard to cut through and creates razor-sharp edges when you hack bits off so I struggled for ten minutes to remove it from the packaging, making my hand ache and cutting myself to ribbons. Grrrrr. It's not even as if there are any tiny parts that will get lost and that need to be kept inside a totally sealed unit. It also seems a bit silly to have a wooden toy inside plastic packaging because it rather defeats the whole object.
But enough about the packaging. Once I'd finally managed to get into it, what you get is a chunky wooden toy car with a cheeky wooden policeman who looks rather like a Weeble. As you push round the wheels, the policeman driver spins round and round with them, which Pierre thought was hilarious !
The toy is sturdily built and has survived all sorts of rough and tumble play, being dropped from the high chair, bounced off the wall - in fact the only thing that slightly damaged the paintwork was when I accidentally scraped the bottom with the scissors when trying to remove the invincible plastic packaging !
This would make a great stocking filler to counteract all those elctronic toys that will doubtless be on zillions of Christmas wishlists at the end of the month.
