Blitz the nits with Picksan ! (review)

Apologies in advance if reading this blogpost makes your head itch (why does the mere mention of headlice have that effect?!) but if you're a parent, it's something you need to think about before it becomes a problem.

Scientists in the USA have found that head lice have developed a "high level" of resistance to some of the most popular treatments. Southern Illinois University discovered that 104 out of the 109 lice populations they tested had high levels of gene mutations, which have been linked to resistance to pyrethroids. Everyone knows that the little blighters are getting more resistant to synthetic and chemical products, but there is some good news. Research carried out by Professor Dr Mehlhorn from the Dusseldorf University shows that lice are less resistant to natural products like herbs and oils.

Picksan have raided Mother Nature's medicine cabinet to create their NO LICE! Preventative Spray and LICE STOP Shampoo Treatment, which have been used to treat head lice in Europe for over ten years. Both products contain a unique blend of natural ingredients including the patented MelAza extract from the seed of the Neem tree. Neem has been used in India for thousands of years as a treatment for head lice.

They are free from parabens, SLES, DEET, insecticide and silicon but are scientifically proven to be effective. They can be used on children aged 3+, are kind to the hair and scalp with a pleasant fragrance and increase the suppleness of the hair for easy combing - another way they help in keeping hair nit-free.

As a mum of three and a teacher to boot, I've been around the block a few times when it comes to head lice, but I realised that I've still been believing some of the myths surrounding the little critters.

5 COMMON MYTHS surrounding head lice

1. “Head lice are most prominent in September when children return to school”
Wrong – there is no evidence to suggest that September is the most popular month for head lice. Head lice appear throughout the year.

2. “Head lice are only attracted to people with un-washed hair”
Wrong – head lice are attracted to all kinds of hair, clean or unclean

3. “If a child has head lice, you must wash all of their bedding, toys and clothes”
Wrong – head lice only live in hair and without blood they can only survive for a few hours.

4. “The most effective natural approach to tackling head lice is by using a comb”
Wrong – head lice and nits are becoming resistant to combs and hair dryers – they are stubborn and hold tight! Using a natural treatment like LICE STOP as well as a comb will maximize your chances of removing all lice.

5. “You should only send your child back to school once they are completely lice-free”
False – A study has shown that after just three hours, 94% of head lice were killed with LICE STOP!

According to Picksan, used daily, NO LICE! Preventative Spray is scientifically proven to provide effective all-day protection from head lice for the whole family – ideal for when there has been an outbreak of head lice at school or nursery.

LICE STOP Shampoo is clinically proven to remove 94% of lice within three hours. Apply to towel-dried hair, by massaging into the scalp. Simply leave the treatment for 15-20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with warm water and combing with a nit comb. Simply repeat the treatment ten days later.

NO LICE! And LICE STOP are both priced at £8.95 for 100ml and are available from Holland & Barrett, Victoria Health and other independent health stores.

Disclosure : We received the products in order to write an honest review. However, I'm delighted to report that so far, I haven't needed to use the Lice Stop - which probably goes to prove how effective the No Lice! is.
