Picture book review : Driving My Tractor - Jan Dobbins

I've just reviewed The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems that I loved as much as Sophie, and Barefoot Books very kindly also sent me through a picture book for Pierre to review. It's called Driving My Tractor and comes with an enhanced CD with audio and video animation of the story.

My first reaction as a parent was WOW ! It's got so much packed into it, from detailed information about crops and farm machinery, to repetitive onomatopaeic phrases that toddlers will love to memorise and join in with and number practice (from 1-5), counting up all the different types of animals and pointing them out in the pictures.

Young readers won't notice all these learning opportunities though - they'll just get totally sucked into the brightly coloured illustrations that are absolutely bursting with details (you'll have to pause on each page for your toddler to point out all the things that are going on in each picture!) and the jolly, rhythmic story.

My immediate thought on seeing the title and front cover was that it's not a very original story and, while this is indeed true, the beautiful pictures and incredible amount of visual detail really add depth to the tale, leading to lots of educational discussions and practice of observation skills.
