Rossini's Chicken & Pork Marinade review

I always love trying out new herbs and spices in the Madhouse kitchen so I was very excited when we received a tub of Rossini's Chicken & Pork Marinade to review. It looks very smart in its shiny silver tin which, for some reason, reminds me of the retro feel of classic American diners. It looks great on the kitchen counter next to the salt and pepper grinders.
I'd never heard of Rossini's so I headed off to find out a bit more about the company. They describe themselves as "the home of artisan hand-blended rubs & marinades, sauces & salts" and I got sucked into browsing through all the delicious-sounding blends of herbs and spices in their product list. I couldn't actually find the one that we received to review at first but that's because it's called StarZest in their online shop.
I carefully pulled the lid off the tin (easier said than done) and was immediately hit by a waft of intense herb and spice fragrance, showing how fresh the ingredients are. Unfortunately for me, the intense fragrance of this particular blend is aniseed, a flavour I'm really not keen on. A closer look at the ingredients list confirmed this - it's a mix of orange zest, fennel (which has an aniseed flavour), natural grey salt, star anise (more aniseed !), black peppercorns, dill and bay leaves. That's purely down to personal taste though so I won't hold it against them !
Some of the other blends really appeal to me - Hot Hawaiian (using, amongst other ingredients, unripe mango, coriander, cumin and brown sugar), Berbere (a blend of 11 roasted spices), Panch Phoron (a Bengali-inspired mix of whole seeds) and Caribbean all leapt out at me.
All Rossini’s products are coeliac friendly and are registered with the Vegan Society. They can be used dry on meat, added to casseroles or blended with olive oil to create a marinade. They're definitely worth a look if you want to jazz up your spice rack with something a bit special.
