Warburton's Artisan Gluten Free Bread (review)

While sliced white is great for the kids' lunchboxes, you just can't beat freshly baked bread if you want a really satisfying sandwich. The crunchy crust, the airy interior, the chewy texture ... cut straight from the loaf or lightly grilled in the oven ... slathered in butter, dripping in honey or layered with cheese and ham ... if you want seriously satisfying bread, you just have to make it yourself. Oh no, hang on, scrap that - would you believe me if I told you that these two rustic beauties are made by none other than Warburton's ?

If that was hard enough to believe, get ready for another shocker - they're gluten free ! Whether it’s down to dietary sensitivity or simply the desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle, 30% of Brits now buy or eat gluten and wheat free foods. In response to this growing demand, Newburn Bakehouse, Warburtons range of wheat and gluten free products, has added two new Artisan Loaves to its range: the Classic White Artisan Loaf and the traditional White Sourdough Artisan Cob.

I wasn't sure how a national bakery chain could adopt the artisan label but I was impressed to learn that Newburn Bakehouse has only two or three dedicated bakers who bake no more than 500 loaves a day. They certainly look and taste taste more like the bread that you'd buy fresh from an independent baker (or make yourself) than something you can pick up at the supermarket.

The Classic White Artisan Loaf is lovely and soft and chewy. It's great for sandwiches and toast or my guilty pleasure - spreading it with butter and using it to mop up the gravy with my Sunday roast !

The White Sourdough Artisan Cob has a denser texture and a lovely tangy flavour. This is my favourite and I actually had to double check that it was gluten free because it tasted so good I was convinced it couldn't be !

Whether or not you need a gluten-free diet, I definitely recommend giving them a go because they taste really fresh and high quality. They're available exclusively at Sainsbury's.
