Our Little Secret Fiery Kadhai Dine-In Kit with Basmati Rice review

As you can't have failed to notice if you're a regular reader of my blog, I love cooking from scratch. However, there are some days when I get in late from work or we end up going out on an adventure and by the time I get home, I just haven't got the time or energy to cook up a long complicated meal.

Our Little Secret sent through one of their Dine-In kits for us to try which promises a tasty meal on the table in just twelve minutes. (You may remember, we reviewed their Enticing Peshwari Makhani sauce a few weeks ago.)

Inside the pack are four different elements - sachets of whole spices, curry paste, curry sauce and microwavable basmati rice.

The first job is to heat the spices in a drizzle of oil to release their flavours.

Then you add chopped chicken breast (and I added a chopped onion too) and cook for 2-3 minutes. You could try with lamb, beef or pork instead, or the pack says, for a vegetarian option, to replace the meat with paneer, tofu, boiled chick peas or your favourite vegetables.

Add the paste and simmer for 1-2 minutes.

Add the sauce and simmer for 5-6 minutes, ensuring that the meat is fully cooked. The pack promises a fiery dish and gives it a 3 chilli rating. We did find it a tad too spicy so I added some crème fraîche and a bit of tomato purée to tame it down a bit.

The rice needs heating in the microwave for 2 minutes and you have a complete meal on the table. It tastes great, with a fresher flavour than when using a jar of sauce, thanks to the whole spices.

The pack contains 2-3 servings and 1/3 of the pack provides 264 calories, 7g of fat (of which 1g saturates), 42g of carbs (of which 2g sugars), 7g of protein, 1g of salt and 4g of fibre.

The packaging promises 100% natural ingredients, with no additives, preservatives, artificial colours or flavours.

  1. Sounds very tasty but to be honest that's quite expensive for what you get!

    1. It is more expensive than the usual jars, but it's still cheaper than a takeaway, I suppose !
