Wild Science Lip Balm Lab review

National Science & Engineering Week is just kicking off  - it's from 14th-23rd March - so we were invited to review one of Interplay's Wild Science kits. We've discovered some of these kits before and love the fact that, as well as being great fun to play with and getting kids hands on with science, they actually create proper beauty products that you can use or give away as gifts.

We received the Lip Balm Lab kit which has been given a fresh new look for 2014. When you unpack the box, the intriguing array of contents include Soy Ester, Baby Oil, Vegetable Wax Beads, Fine Shimmer, Strawberry Flavouring and Oil Based Red Colouring for making the lip balms. You also get all the paraphernalia that you need for making them, such as spoons, a spatula, beakers and a microwave heating tray.

The instruction manual guides you through the process step-by-step and is easy to follow, although younger children will need a bit of supervision for manipulating the hot water bath using a kettle or the microwave. The kit is suggested for children aged 8+, but I was happier letting 12-year-old Sophie have a go rather than younger sister Juliette, at least until we totally know what we're doing !

For tweens and teens who are just starting to take an interest in cosmetics and beauty products, this is a great behind-the-scenes look at what goes into all those things they want to slap on their faces without once thinking about what they contain. Even as a grown-up, I found it absolutely fascinating to see how lip balm is made. I'm loving the finished product that Sophie kindly donated to me too - it's just as good as a shop-bought one and I love knowing that it has been totally homemade using the natural waxes and oils from the box.

Other products in the range include Perfume Lab, Magic Nail Lab, Hyperlauncher Rocket Ball, Weird Slime Workshop and Bath Bomb Factory.

  1. I would have loved this when I was a kid, I agree that most young teens will happily use any beauty product without wondering what's in it first
