Children's book review : Hero / Jack Pepper - Sarah Lean

Go on, admit it, there's something about the cute little dog on the front cover of these books that makes you want to go "awww", and that's exactly what happens when you read the stories too.  Jack Pepper is a little dog but he has a huge heart and an even bigger power to bring out the best in people.

In Hero, we meet Leo Biggs, a little boy with a big imagination who secretly dreams of being a Roman gladiator. He has a best friend, George, but he wishes he could be in with the in-crowd at school and that means getting in with the class bad boy, Warren Miller. He makes some bad choices but ends up proving to everyone, but most importantly to himself, that he is indeed a good guy and even a hero. It's an enjoyable read with an important message for young readers about the value of real friendships, not giving in to peer pressure and being brave enough to be who you are and follow your individuality. Leo learns some important life lessons, as does Warren, with a little help from his new four-legged friend, Jack Pepper.

The other book, Jack Pepper, is a prequel to Hero, written especially for World Book Day 2014 and on sale with an incredibly low £1 price tag (so you'll be able to get it for free with a World Book Day book token). It is a quick read - just 96 pages - and tells the cute tale of Jack Pepper when he was a little puppy, already getting into an adventure and making friends with children in need of a furry shoulder to cry on.

The books are aimed at young readers, aged about 8-10, and I think they would appeal to both sexes.
