Ravensburger Puzzle Club : The Hobbit 200XXL piece puzzle review

The December puzzles have just come in from the Ravensburger Puzzle Club and once again, they're bang on trend. The theme for this month is Peter Jackson's newly-released film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. As this is the first of three Hobbit films to be released - the second and third episodes are scheduled for 2013 and 2014 - I can see this turning into another hugely popular series so this puzzle will be a great investment, with renewed interest as each new film is released, preventing it from getting left in the back of the toy cupboard !

We received the 200 XXL piece which was perfect for the girls to do (with a little help from me, in particular to sift through finding all the edge pieces at the start!) but there is also a 1000 piece Return to Middle Earth Panoramic for older puzzle/Hobbit fans. Sophie is lusting after the 3d puzzle ball version that she has seen in the shops too.

The completed 49 x 36cm design is packed with pictures of characters from the film, making it easy to complete. (Apologies for the lack of picture of the finished design - the camera battery had run out when I tried to take one #mummyfail !) We haven't been to see the film yet but we have seen the trailers so we recognised Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf with no problems. We'll come back to it after watching the film to see if we can name all of the other characters next time !

It's great for getting the kids to practise their observation and matching skills, spotting each character on the picture on the box and finding the right place in the puzzle. I could tell you about the lovely thick cardboard and precisely cut pieces but I say that every time so it goes without saying when it's Ravensburger now !

star rating : 5/5

  1. I love this jigsaw, never mind the kids, I'd sit and do it myself. Thanks for the review Cheryl.
