The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts ...

Pierre, now aged 3 & a half, has suddenly taken a real interest in getting involved in the Madhouse family baking sessions. It's therefore important to get back to basics and use really simple recipes, such as the ones I remember making during my own childhood. You can't get much simpler than jam tarts !

We used the basic jam tart pastry recipe from Baking Mad (that you can find here), using 250g flour, 110g butter and 60ml cold water. Everybody has flour and butter in the cupboard/fridge so you really can knock these up at a minute's notice.

I always love watching the kids getting hands on and learning about where food comes from. They're always really surprised by "kitchen chemistry" when ingredients come together to make pastry or cakes rise in the oven. They are always really proud of their creations too which is lovely to see.

You can tell Juliette has been practising making snowballs ! We wrapped the ball of dough in clingfilm and popped it in the fridge to chill for half an hour.

Pierre enthusuistically rolled out the dough.

Juliette used olive oil and kitchen roll to grease the cake tins.

The pastry cutters are quite sharp on the top and hurt little hands when you press down on them so we use a mini rolling pin to press them down.

Into the tins !

I always tell them not to put in too much jam because it will splurge over the top when they cook but they never listen !!

They were a bit crumbly when I tried to prise them out of the tin but the Madhouse Mini-testers were very impressed with their efforts. It's such a simple recipe to follow that we'll definitely be making these again.
