I received a very intriguing email a couple of weeks ago, asking if I'd like to review a new range of beauty products targeting babies and children. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary so far, but this email came all the way from Israel ! The product range is called 08 (also written as Oeight on the bottles) and is manufactured in Israel, using natural minerals, including some from the Dead Sea. It is also free of SLS and SLES.
I decided to try out the teen range of haircare and just a few days later, a package arrived from Israel (much to the excitement of the lady at the post office when I went to pick it up, because it was all written in Hebrew all over the box !).
Once I got home, I opened the parcel and took out the two big 400ml bottles of shampoo and conditioner. They come in very bland, white packaging which wouldn't leap off the shelf at me if I passed it in the supermarket. This surprised me, as they are from the range aimed at teens, so I was expecting bright colours or bold graphics.
What doesn't help is that all the writing on the back of the bottle is in Hebrew so I couldn't check the instructions or the ingredients list. This is a new range, so they may still be working on the packaging, but I really think they need to translate everything into English in order to be more suited to the international market.
Both products are very nice. The shampoo has a lovely apple fragrance and got my hair feeling literally squeaky clean. The conditioner has the same fragrance (but it seemed less strong) and it left my hair feeling tangle-free and nicely hydrated. Without understanding a word that was written on the packaging, I couldn't tell you any more about them though !
The website is in English so I headed over there in my quest for background information. It explains that the shampoo contains natural apple extract to purify and refresh your hair and vitamins E and B5, as well as soya and rice proteins, to "help strengthen the hair roots and maintain a healthy scalp, leaving the hair looking healthy and revitalized".
I was surprised to read that the conditioner should only be applied to the ends, not over the scalp - oops ! The write up explains : "Teens Conditioner contains a smorgasbord of natural extracts, including apple fruit extract rich in folic acid and powerful enzyme activity, olive oil, and Vitamin E. The wholesome blend of vitamins with plant-based keratin strengthens the hair fibers and protects from the elements. A deliciously moisturizing conditioner with a light apple fragrance designed especially for kids, yet just as nourishing for all the family!"
The full ingredients lists are also available on the website. For the shampoo : Deionized Water, Magnesium Laureth Sulfate, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Apple Amino Acids, Glycol Distearate & Laureth 4, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein & Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein & Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Gluconolactone, Sodium Benzoate, Polyquaternium 7, Tocopheryl Acetate, Sodium Chloride, Fragrance, Citric Acid, Hexyl Cinnamaldehyde, Benzyl Alcohol, Green 5. For the conditioner : Deionized Water, Behentrimonium Chloride, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerin, (Herbal), Isopropyl Myristate, Dimethicone, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Hydrolyzed Corn Protein & Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein & Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Gluconolactone, Sodium Benzoate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Glyceryl Stearate, Fragrance, Hexyl Cinnamaldehyde, Benzyl Alcohol. Some of those sound a bit of a mouthful, which is never a good thing in my experience, but I googled a few of the more artificial-sounding chemical compounds in there and none of them sound too dodgy so I will take their "100% natural" claim at face value.
In conclusion, I like both of the products - they work well and smell lovely - but I do think the packaging needs a redesign so that it is more appealing to both the international market and the teen age groups it targets.
