Pierre was excited to receive a new picture book to review called What is a Crocodile's Favourite Thing? by Ben Hawkes a couple of weeks ago. He was instantly attracted to the bright colours and cute animal pictures on the covers.
We settled down to read it at bedtime, along with big sister Juliette, and excitedly read the warning on the first page : "Warning ! This is a very silly book. Reading this book may cause silliness, more silliness and, in some cases, your bottom may drop off" !
The book doesn't have a story as such. It is a humorous look at things that could be (but probably aren't) a crocodile's favourite thing - could it be riding a bicycle made of jelly on the moon or having a bath full of mud and worms ? The kids loved giggling at the silly ideas and illustrations.
Especially when they got ever so slightly rude - "Is it ... eating a dirty pants sandwich?" seemed to be the highlight of the whole book for them !
It's a great book for having a giggle with young readers and getting them to use their imagination to come up with some even more weird and wonderful suggestions. It only takes a few minutes to read but the silly inventing game can go on for ages - you'd be surprised at some of the zany ideas your kids can come up with. Driving backwards through a lake of baked beans and wearing pants full of ice cream were just a couple that the Madhouse Mini-testers came up with !
