Earlier in the year, Growing Up Milk undertook a pan-European survey to investigate the eating habits of toddlers and the attitudes and knowledge of mums about toddler nutrition across several countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, and Sweden.
Further to this, they asked some French mummy bloggers, including me, to record a toddler food diary for a day to compare and contrast with their UK and other European counterparts.
Here's what Pierre eats in a typical day. He's now 3 & 1/2, goes to school and has school dinners, so I'll also give you a retrospective look back at what he used to eat when he was smaller.
Typical food diary for Pierre, aged 3 & 1/2 :
Breakfast : a carton of Bledidéj Croissance ready to drink flavoured milk (equivalent of Growing Up Milk), a chocolate pancake and a Ficello (equivalent of Cheestrings)
mid-morning snack at school (provided by the parents) : a pouch of fruit puree
lunch (school dinners) : grated carrots with salad dressing as starter, chicken in cream sauce with rice and peas, a portion of cheese with bread, yogurt or fruit
after-school snack : a banana (until recent years, parents had to give a snack for the afternoon too but this was banned in a bid to prevent obesity - kids go to school until 4.30pm)
dinner : pasta with butter, ham and sweetcorn, a yogurt
Typical food diary for Pierre, aged 1 & 1/2 :
breakfast - breastmilk
mid-morning - 1/2 banana chopped into slices and a toddler biscuit
lunch - rice, finely chopped ham and mashed carrots, a petit suisse baby yogurt, breastmilk
mid-afternoon snack - breastmilk, jar of fruit puree
dinner - Bledichef Du Soir babymeal made with (for example) small pasta, mashed vegetables and added baby milk
bedtime - breastmilk
(Note : Breastfed babies are prescribed a vitamin D supplement as routine in France.)
So what do you think? How does this compare to what your toddler eats?
