Kids' DVD review : A Monster Christmas

Sunday afternoons used to be a time for getting out in the fresh air, enjoying long walks and taking the kids to the park with their bikes. But now, the evenings are drawing in fast - by 5.30 it's getting dark - and the weather is leaving a lot to be desired, so we've rekindled our old habit of having a family DVD session instead.

This weekend, we all settled down to watch A Monster Christmas. But don't worry, as I reassured Pierre, these are nice monsters - in fact they're scared of humans. Quite rightly so too, because the cute Snowkids (think baby abominable snowmen) are being chased by a Cruella DeVille-esque scientist who wants to capture them, with the help of the rather intellectually challenged man at the dog pound. This is a family movie though, so it all has a happy ending. They are taken in by a little girl and ultimately reunited with their dad so everyone can have a happy Christmas.

The film reminded me of a cross between 101 Dalmatians and Daddy I'm A Zombie, with the spotty pups replaced by furry snow-monsters ! It's not hugely original but it is cute and the kids enjoyed it. I knew the voices were familiar but I couldn't place them. I checked on the box and it features the voices of Ariel Winter (Sofia The First), Emilio Estevez, Ray Liotta (Bee Movie), and Jane Lynch (Glee).

It's a short film - more a feature-length cartoon that a proper movie - with a run time of 42 minutes but that could be a good thing for young viewers with a short attention span. I wouldn't pay £12.99 for a film that short but you can pick it up for a much lower price at amazon.
