Picture Book Review : When It Snows - Richard Collingridge

With Halloween done and dusted, not to mention the sudden arrival of toy catalogues in the post, all thoughts are starting to turn to Christmas. If you fancy some festive bedtime reading to start building up the excitement, the latest book that we received to review - When It Snows by Richard Collingridge - is perfect.

The story, which has very short texts but relies on beautiful illustrations that paint a thousand words, takes us on a magical journey across frozen landscapes. You'll get to meet the arctic animals and even ride on a polar bear ...

.. discover the secret land where the snowmen live ...

... encounter the mystical Queen of the Poles ...

... and possibly uncover Santa's secret. Could this giant reindeer explain how he manages to deliver all those millions of presents in one short night?

It's a journey of wonder and enchantment that will really make your children use their imagination as they explore the different pictures, all teeming with detail and which led to much excited chatter at The Madhouse. "Is The Queen of the Poles nice or nasty?" "Does she know Father Christmas?" "Is there a really big sleigh to go with the really big reindeer or are all the presents just hung off its body?" "Do the snowmen that we make in the garden go to the land of snowmen too?" And those are just the questions that I can remember Juliette and Pierre asking !

As a total bookworm, I love the sentiment of the closing page. All of these magical lands can be visited whenever you want because your favourite book takes you there. If that's not an incentive to love books, I don't know what is!
