A Very Special Year for The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Eric Carle's iconic children's picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary on 21st March 2014. The much-loved book is apparently the most read children’s book in the UK, having sold over 29 million copies worldwide since its publication in 1969 and receiving an average of 1.7 million visitors each month on the official website, www.eric-carle.com.

Here at The Madhouse, we love the book so much that we even created an edible Very Hungry Caterpillar out of meatballs ! We were therefore delighted to be asked to become Official Very Hungry Caterpillar Bloggers in the run up to the special anniversary celebrations.

In honour of its special birthday, The Very Hungry Caterpillar has a fabulous new line of products launching and we’ll be telling you all about them over the coming months.

Here are this month's selection, which Pierre got very excited about, as you can see !

First, we discovered the Very Hungry Caterpillar Tabard (RRP £7.95, available at Amazon, Fortnum & Mason, Jojo Maman Bebe). This wipe-clean Hungry Caterpillar Tabard is perfect for protecting your child's clothes when doing messy play, cooking, water play, brushing their teeth, eating spaghetti bolognese - anything that is likely to result in splashes and spills ! Front and back feature colourful designs and 4-year-old Pierre absolutely loves it. To give you an idea of size, it's perfect for him but 8-year-old Juliette also manages to squeeze into it (just about) when she wants to annoy her brother ! The elastic sides are easy to slip on and off and the front of the tabard offers much better coverage than Pierre's normal aprons which usually come down far too low.

Next up was The Very Hungry Caterpillar 3 Piece Porcelain Set (RRP £25, available at http://www.portmeirion.co.uk/). This is absolutely beautiful, although I have told Pierre that he must be extra careful with it because he is more used to using plastic plates and bowls. He feels very grown up now though, so this is a great transition onto using grown-up tableware. They are all Dishwasher Safe, Microwave Safe, Oven Proof and even Freezer Proof. As an extra bonus, each Mug, Plate & Bowl Set comes packaged in a sturdy gift box with a wobbly very hungry caterpillar that is perfect as a storage box for your child's bedroom. Pierre's is currently full of toy cars but it would be perfect for pens, marbles, Lego, Playmobil or anything else that usually ends up underfoot or sucked up in the vacuum cleaner !

And finally for this month, The Very Hungry Caterpillar lunch bag (RRP £13.99, available at www.steamer.co.uk). Pierre immediately put it around his neck and started filling it with his treasures - a mini ipad, a soft toy and a book. I was amazed at how much he could fit in it ! It's sturdy, water-resistant and wipe-clean so is perfect as a carry bag for little trips out and about or just for keeping treasured possessions safe, as well as being used as a lunch bag as designed. Pierre was also very excited to see that the red trim matched his tabard !

We absolutely loved the products that we received this month. They're funky, functional and very well made, so we're really looking forward to seeing what arrives in our next parcel.

Disclosure : Having been selected as a Very Hungry Caterpillar Official Blogger, we received the products in order to write an honest review.
