Sunday weigh-in : To Dukan or not to Dukan? That is the question !


I've had another week flat out with no time to do proper exercise. My two half-days off on Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon when I usually fit in my fitness DVD/Wii Fit were eaten up with an eye test for all three Madhouse kids (Wednesday) and visits to the pupils on work experience (Friday). Even Saturday morning was taken up with our school open day. The next couple of weeks will be just as bad - the Polish delegation will be visiting (after our trip to Gdynia in October) so I have lots of extra meetings and social events with them scheduled, then there are the parent-teacher evenings plus Juliette's birthday to squeeze in ... there just aren't enough hours in the day at the moment !

I haven't been a total slob though - I've been walking lots this week to visit the various work experience places so my steps have been well above 10,000 every day. Food has been pretty good - loads of veggies (Hoppin John & Collards, Scrambled Eggs à la Niçoise wraps, Chorizo & Kale stuffed Courgettes) and I didn't eat a single one of the honeycomb and chococlate chip cookies that we made !

Speaking of food, you may be wondering about the title of this week's post. I've been invited to trial the Dukan diet and be a case study for them but, looking into it a bit more closely, I'm not at all sure about it. Having days when you can only eat protein and other days when you can only eat things from the 100 allowed ingredients seems unbalanced, not to mention boring. Tucking into a plate of just chicken or fish or beef with not a veggie or carb in sight and fruit not allowed either seems to go against all the healthy eating principles that have been instilled in us for years. It's supposed to be very effective, especially short term, but I'm less convinced the more I read about it - have any of you tried it? One thing I do like about it is the "true weight" calculation at the start, to work out your target weight, taking into account things like how old you are, how many kids you've had, etc. Apparently, I should be aiming for 70.3kg, rather than 68.3kg. I won't update my badges though, tempting as it is !

So, on to the scales - 86.5kg, that's 300g down from last week and I'm over the moon because it's that time of the month and, quite frankly, I was expecting a gain !

Positives of the week

- We went to McDonalds after the open day yesterday and I was sorely tempted to go for a Bacon Max Giant Burger (or whatever it's called !) but swapped to a salmon salad at the last minute !

- Whatever the scales are saying, my rings and watch seem extra loose and my coat zips up more easily, despite the thick winter jumpers

- The badges are on the move - last week 7kg lost and 15lb lost/46lb to go. This week 7kg lost and 16lb lost/45lb to go. Every little helps, even 300g !

Current targets 

Last week's target : Hit my second target - my pre-xmas weight of 85.9kg. Replace the school canteen by SlimFast bars and ready-to-drink shakes. (getting ever closer !)

This week's targets : Hit my second target - my pre-xmas weight of 85.9kg. Get back to two work out DVD/Wii Fit sessions.

Short-term targets 21kg to lose sounds a lot but breaking it down, aiming for 1kg a week, that's only about 5 months - plenty of time for heading off to Turkey in August !

first target, get my "weight to lose" badge down into the 40's (it's currently on 51lb) (done),
 second goal - get back to 85.9kg, my pre-xmas weight
third goal : get my "kg lost" badge back into double figures 
fourth goal : get my "weight loss" badge higher than my "still to go" badge
fifth goal : get back into my (smallest) bright blue jeans comfortably
sixth goal : get back to 77kg - my lowest weight since my pregnancies

Longer-term targets :  Hit my target weight of 68kg.

TARGET WEIGHT : 67.8kg
WEIGHT LAST WEEK  : 87.4kg 
WEIGHT TODAY : 86.5kg
WEIGHT LOST SO FAR :  7.3kg
STILL TO GO : 18.4kg

  1. I'd suggest avoiding the dukan diet, it's basically a quick fix rather than long term success, something best to avoid the lbs always pile back on. Plus if it isn't nutritionally balanced it can lead to long term health problems, not really worth it just to slim down for a short period of time. The best way will always be to eat a little less and move a little more, it's a pain as it takes longer but it's worth it for permanent results without feeling restricted.

    I know it sometimes feels like it would be nice to have a quick fix but I'm sure you're like me and are also doing this for health not just to look slimmer. A lot of these fad diets just aim to work on the waistline. You're doing great as it is, just be positive with what you are doing.

That was exactly what I thought, I was immediately put off by the cutting out food groups concept, but they've overhauled it and come up with a Dukan 2 Diet which only cuts out fruit/veg to focus on protein on one day, adding in the other food groups a day at a time every week. It looks less unbalanced and is a slower, more long-term scheme. There are things I like (the recipe ideas, the coaching and online forum) but I'm still not sure about restricting fruit/veg. As it's a new concept, there's not much info about it online at the moment so I'm intrigued but not really convinced at the moment !

  2. I agree with Sharon, I'd avoid the Dukan diet too. When my diet was so restricted when following the Juice Plus eating plan I was more likely to binge. Whereas now I have combined Slimming World eating plan with the Juice Plus I feel my diet is more balanced and I enjoy treats in moderation. I also believe if you eat a balanced diet you are more likely to keep the weight off x

    1. I'll be blogging my thoughts about Dukan 2 tomorrow - I'll give it a go for a week as an experiment but will play it by ear. I've done a menu plan which sounds pretty much the same as normal so I'll see what happens ! I definitely wouldn't have done the original Dukan diet though

  4. You went into a McDonald's and had a salmon salad? I am very impressed! I still haven't checked out the Dukan Diet 2 book yet - a day without carbs would be torture for me to be honest!
