Streamline Fruit Fillings review

Streamline Foods, manufacturer and supplier of Reduced Sugar Jams and Marmalades, have created a lovely new product, and they sent us a couple of cartons to try out. They have come up with a range of Fruit Fillings in three varieties : Morello Cherry, Fruits of The Forest and Apple & Blackberry.

The girls couldn't wait to get their aprons on and try them out ! The only difficult thing was deciding what to make with them because they're so versatile. I had plans for making something beautiful with meringue nests, fruit filling and whipped cream but the manufacturers also have loads of other ideas up their sleeves. They say : " Delicious served hot or cold, Fruit Fillings are ideal for filling, topping and pouring on pies, pancakes, crumbles, strudels, flans, cheesecakes, meringues, gateau’s, trifles, waffles and pastries. They are also an ideal accompaniment to ice cream, yogurt, porridge and much more. The only limitation is your imagination!"

Well, once the girls decided that they wanted to be chief bakers, we went for something extremely simple and used ready-made flaky pastry to make individual fruit tartlets.

We were all very impressed with the huge pieces of fruit that came out of the carton. Closer inspection of the packaging reveals that fruit is the top ingredient and accounts for over 50% of the contents. We pinched together the tops of the tarts to make little closed fruit pies.

While these little pies were cooking in the oven, we decided to use up the rest of the fruit filling in one big fruit tart that we would eat as dessert for Sunday dinner. It was such a simple dessert to make, taking literally seconds, and was absolutely delicious when warmed in the oven and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (so simple too - after cooking the roast and turning off the oven, I popped it in the still warm oven and it heated up a treat while we were eating our dinner. How's that for not wasting energy ?!)

I was amazed at how far one carton went. The little individual pies sprang open when cooking but still tasted delicious. If you want to make really pretty refined desserts, these fruit fillings would be an ideal ingredient but, as we proved, for absolutely simple, kid-friendly cooking, they're perfect too. They're also ideal for keeping in the cupboard in case you need a dessert in a hurry because you can keep them in the cupboard for up to a year.

The fruit filling contains about 120 calories per 100g so each carton contains about 600 calories, which isn't bad when you consider how much we made with it..
