Whether it's on TV or in books, Horrid Henry is always a popular character here at The Madhouse. The Mini-testers love living vicariously through his naughty antics and often dissolve into fits of giggles. I therefore knew that the Horrid Henry Tricks The Tooth Fairy book would get a warm reception. As it's an Early Reader book, designed as a stepping stone between picture books and reading books, it's ideal for Juliette's age group or slightly younger, and the subject matter couldn't have been more apt, as she also has a wobbly tooth at the moment !
The writing is widely spaced and broken up with lots of colourful illustrations so beginner or reluctant readers won't feel overwhelmed. It's also possible to read the whole book in one or two sittings, which is handy if your kids have a short attention span and won't remember what they read if it was too long before.
The book tells the story of Henry being fed up at not having a wobbly tooth (or, more importantly for him, getting some cash from the tooth fairy !), so he goes to great lengths to obtain a tooth to put under his pillow, regardless of whether or not it comes out of his own mouth ! I won't give away the ending but suffice to say, it reinforces the message that cheats never win and that what goes around comes around. Great life lessons for any little readers.
If you want to get your kids to practise their reading now that the holidays are over, this is a fun and appealing way of doing so.
