Kellogg's New & Improved Kids' Cereals review

Kellogg's recently sent a selection of their kids' breakfast cereals to The Madhouse for us to try out. We discovered new Coco Pops Croc Prints, Honey Pops and Rice Krispies Multi-Grain Shapes and rediscovered Honey Loops. All four products have been specially formulated to provide the perfect compromise between taste and nutrition.

Kellogg's explain : "We know it can be hard to find the right balance of what your little ones need, and the taste they love, so we are adding four new lower sugar products to our range which will offer mums greater choice at breakfast time. Coco Pops Croc Prints, Rice Krispies Multigrain Strawberry, Honey Loops and Honey Pops are familiar brands but have healthier recipes- so you can still feel good about giving them to your kids. Fact: They are lower in sugar, lower in salt, made with wholegrain, high in fibre and a source of Vitamin D (25 per cent Recommended Daily Amount). They’ll start to appear in store from this month. This quartet of new cereals are also healthy enough that they meet the strict criteria to be advertised to children and are part of our on-going strategy to launch new products which offer parents a greater choice of breakfast cereals when they do their food shop. We think we have listened to what mums have been saying about wanting lower sugar cereals which offer good nutrition, that kids will actually eat, so we are really proud of what we have achieved."

Sounds great on paper, so it was time to grab some bowls, spoons and milk and see what the kids thought !

The first box that caught their eye was the Coco Pops Croc Prints. As the name suggests, you get cute footprint shaped chocolatey cereal in your bowl. I always think the cocoa flavour of regular Coco Pops is too strong so I was pleasantly surprised to see that these have a slightly subtler flavour. The kids thought they were lovely and chocolatey though and are happy to have a handful straight out of the box instead of a biscuit or sweets, which sounds like a good swap to me. They're also lovely with milk.

Now, I was convinced Honey Pops were old news so I was confused to see these labelled as a new product. A quick bit of research revealed that, while these have been around on the continent for donkeys' years (we've eaten them in France many times as Miel Pops), they have only just been launched on the UK market. They look like small cheese footballs and have a nice mild flavour - they're not overly sweet and the honey flavour isn't too strong. These are another good snack substitute straight from the box, as well as being great with milk.

The Rice Krispies Multigrain Shapes got rave reviews from the Madhouse Mini-testers. This is the first strawberry-flavoured breakfast cereal that we have ever come across and it's delicious. The shapes and colours make it appealing to kids - I can see mainly stars and little men, not sure what the other shapes are supposed to be - and the taste is really nice. A definite hit and one that we'll undoubtedly be buying again.

And finally, the new healthier Honey Loops. Well, it's been a while since we ate these so I couldn't actually remember what the old ones tasted like. Suffice to say, if you hadn't told me they'd reduced the sugar and made them healthier, I'd never have realised. They're sweet enough without being overly syrupy sweet and they're also less sticky, if you plan on eating them straight out of the box !

The kids ultimate breakfast of choice at the moment is a bowl with a handful of each of the four cereals, all mixed up ! Now you know why I call it The Madhouse !
