Levi Roots Smoky Jerk Cooking Sauce review

Short on time and energy yesterday, I headed to my kitchen cupboard looking for something to turn my defrosted chicken fillets into something quick and simple for dinner. This jar of Levi Roots Smoky Jerk Cooking Sauce from a previous Degustabox was ideal.

The label promises a sweet and smoky tomato sauce flavoured with jerk spices that is great with chicken. As you can see, it is packed with tomatoes, onions and spices.

The heat rating on the jar is one pepper, corresponding to mild. I would dispute that - it contains  Scotch Bonnet Chilli, garlic and paprika and it's fairly spicy. It won't blow your socks off or leave your mouth on fire but if you're opting for a mild sauce, you probably want something very low on chilli heat and this may surprise you. It may be mild for Levi Roots but I'd have given this at least a 2/medium chilli rating.

I stirfried some chicken, onions and red peppers for 10 minutes.

Then poured over the sauce, zapped a pouch of rice in the microwave and within fifteen minutes, dinner was ready.

100g of the sauce provides 66 calories, 1g of protein, 9.8g of carbs, 2.3g of fat, 1g of fibre and 0.56g of sodium. For the nice spicy taste and sheer convenience, it gets my seal of approval.

star rating : 4/5
