Picture book review : Nat the Cat's Sunny Smile - Jez Alborough

Pierre has been excitedly discovering lots of new books that we were sent to review and was instantly attracted by the bright colours and cute illustration on the front cover of Nat the Cat's Sunny Smile.

The book is written in rhyme, which always goes down well with the Madhouse Mini-testers, and is great fun to read out loud at bedtime. Each page has a huge, brightly coloured picture that really enhances the text. The characters are all really appealing and the story really caught Pierre's imagination.

As the title suggests, Nat the Cat starts off with a bright sunny smile. He packs up a picnic and goes off to invite his friends, Billy Goat and Hugo Hare. But both of his pals are in a bad mood and don't want to go. This dampens Nat's spirits and he ends up feeling gloomy himself, until Hugo and Billy have a change of heart and decide to go along, cheering up their friend at the same time.

It's a lovely, feel-good story that will make little readers think about how their mood can affect others. As an added bonus, there is a song at the back which you can go and listen to and download at www.jezalborough.com/natthecat. You can also download colouring sheets and learn to draw Nat the Cat, which is a great follow-on activity after finishing the story.

I've just noticed on the back of the book that two further stories will be coming soon featuring Billy and Hugo - Billy the Goat's Big Breakfast and Hugo the Hare's Rainy Day - so I'll definitely have to look out for those to complete the collection.
