Children's book review : The Big Ideas That Changed The World - Dorling Kindersley

This is the final book that we received to review from DK Books' autumn collection and it follows the same chunky hardback format packed with fascinating facts and brightly coloured photos and pictures as the others. This time it focuses on the man-made world, looking at incredible inventions and the stories behind them.

Even as an adult, I kept stopping and reading bits as I flicked through because it's full of information I'd never heard before and fascinating facts that trivia buffs will love. The book is aimed at children aged 12+ and I love the way that they have dealt with things that will really appeal to kids of this age, like Lego, skateboards and Levi jeans, but also more complicated issues like fibre optics, the World Wide Web and spacesuits, to name but a few.

The book tackles some very complicated themes that even some grown-ups don't really understand (I learnt a thing or two about Smartphones and Blackberries, for example !) but explains them in a simple, kid-friendly way that is easy to understand but also interesting.

It's targetted at readers aged 12+ but 9-year-old Sophie enjoyed reading it and amazing me with her new-found knowledge. She'll definitely come back to it when she's a bit older though because some of the things she'd never even heard of ! It's a fact-filled but fun read that will appeal to readers of both sexes and that is easy to dip in and out of which is great for reluctant readers.
